MGB 1980 MGB carb and oil questions

I'm getting this car running after sitting for 6 yrs and I am looking for a few answers from the experts. What is the recommended oil type and viscosity this takes? It is a 4 cyl 1.8L I think. Also on the carb which is a stock Zenith, the mixture screw has a larger plastic nut and a screw that goes inside of that. When I am adjusting the fuel mixture do I hold the plastic nut from turning or turn them together? Thanks for your help.

Oil recommendations can be a bit like starting a religious holy war sometimes, so you may want to search around on the site to read some of the old threads and see the full discussion -- then again, that may not be as fun as it sounds.

I run Valvoline VR1 20W50 in my '70 MGB (same engine as yours), and have for the last 11 years. It's one that's pretty widely recommended, and not too hard to find. Amazon has it if all else fails.

Don't know the Zeniths, so someone else will have to chime on on that.

Paul, before you start fussing with mixture screws and such, if the car "ran when parked" that shouldn't be a priority. More important would be condition of the piston's rubber diaphragm, inspecting the needle and jet orifice (for any debris from sitting in one position) are of more immediate concern.

As for oil, any good 20~50W will do. All have to "meet or exceed" S.A.E spec's. VR1, Castrol's synths or "High Mileage", Mobil-1, etc. Pick yer poison.
