Hi,

I am helping out some friends with their TR6. clutch MC leaked and the fluid eat up the wiring.

1974 W/O overdrive.

Left fender wall, flasher, fuse box, Two relays

What do the two relays go to?

Hi Clay

Horn and starter, I think. My car is a '75 and doesn't have overdrive - not sure if the J-type uses a relay and if it does I don't know where the relay is mounted.

Great wiring diagrams at www.advanceautowire.com

Hope that helps.

I also have a '74 w/o OD and that diagram is correct for my car, except what I've changed. The top relay is for the horn, the bottom the starter. If the diagram isn't correct, the realys may not be correct either.

When I say it is not correct, it has a big seat belt thing with 12 wires on the diagram that is not on the car. The photo you have posted is what I am looking for. Thanks for the information.

I will be asking more questions as the owner has cut many wire really short! I am trying to separate wires and tape them into "harnesses" by function. That will cut down on the loose wires and make them easier to identify, I hope.

ANyone have an old wiring harness they would like to donate to the cause.

PS, I am doing this for the lady that owns the car for free for her birthday.

The "seat belt thing" you mention is the interlock... its function was to not let the car start when someone was sitting in the seat without their seat belt on. It is a PITA and I just bypassed it in the terminal box located in the foot well of the passenger side. From all the cut wires you describe, it could very well be disconnected by a PO.

By the way, the Bentley manual has the wiring diagram on page 15 (I am going from memory as I don't have the book nearby)

I was never sure where that seatbelt module was supposed to be. My car is supposed to have one, but I have never seen it. I had the switches under the seat, and on the seatbelts (as I recall), but the module itself has not presented itself. I always assumed that a previous owner had binned it in frustration at the buzzer.

The relays have different part numbers, according to TRF's green parts book.

Going by memory here, the seat belt interlock is up under the glove box, in the passenger footwell. As I recall, I used a jumper wire between 11 and 12 to bypass the interlock. No other wires are cut.

That's your answer.
Not that it mattered in the wiring,I don't think.

After you sort out the electrical issues, you may want to recommend they switch over to DOT 5, silicone brake fluid. It will not attack the wire insulation or paint. There are volumes of reading here regarding the change over to silicone.

74 or 74 1/2?
Don,
How can I tell? It has the big rubber bumper boobies.

Quick way to tell the difference: '74 has turn signals above the front bumper, below the grill, in the front valance. '74 1/2 thru '76 have front turn signals attached under the front bumper.

do yourself and her a favor and get her to order correct color coded wire from british wire, if you have to replace any or extend some,

instead of using all black or red or white wires

The seat belt interlock was a failed law by our government to require that the driver's seatbelt be latched before the engine could be started. It was applicable for 1974 year model cars only, and then only for the beginning of the year. By midyear, the law had been revoked, due to the kickback from all involved. Late 1974 year cars normally do not have any parts of the interlock installed.
