TR6 TR6 wheel bearing dust cap replacements ??

Are there any replacement dust caps from some other application that will work, something that has a surface that you can actually grab onto with a pair of pliers, or at least a little better than the stock ones ???

Are TR6 dust caps somehow different from the TR3 caps (or caps on about 10 other cars I've worked on) ????

Just wondering because this always seems to be a point of frustration here on the forum and I've never had a problem.

I've got a very sharp flat screwdriver with about a 1/8" tip. Gently tapping it with a hammer into the "lip" between the cap and the hub and working my way around the edge will start working it out enough to get a bigger screwdriver in. Gently twisting the bigger screwdriver while working around the edges and it pops right off.

Kind of like opening a metal paint can.

Does the TR6 cap have the edge "inside" the hub instead of along the "outside" of the hub or something??

The TR6 and probably the 4 have caps with no edges (shoulder), you drive them in and they bottom out on the inside edge. It is pretty tough to wedge a screw driver between the crack (without bending the cap).I can get mine off but instead of screwdrivers, chisels, and hammers-it would be nice just to grab the cap with a pair of channel locks--the way most other none british cars are.

Thanks. An inside edge explains it all.

And here I thought you guys were just a bunch of whiners /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

I've heard of people tapping and brazing a screw on the end so you have some 'purchase' to get a grip on it and yank it out. Others have mentioned brazing a nut on the end so that you can thread a long screw through it and have a built in 'cap puller'. I haven't heard of an alternate source for them but I also have heard that the replacement caps are made of inferior/flimsy materials compared to the originals.

Has anyone sourced a replacement cap for the TR6 any where other than the big three suppliers? Seems like a suitable local replacement would be available.

The caps I have have a small hole drilled in the center that you thread a long sheet metal screw into that bottoms out on the end of the stub axle and pushes the cap off. Trouble is when the hole becomes enlarged and the screw no longer has a purchase to push the cap off. Then a brazed nut will do the trick. Never had to pry one off on the edges.

I made the mistake of powder coating a new set of caps. The coating was thick enough that I could not get the caps to fit inside the hub. So I had to blast off the coating (not an easy task) to get then to fit.
