It's me again Margaret, Need to know a good way to remove the timing gear oil seal part #104662. So far I'm doing to well. (sigh) and of course I can't find the new one so that I can at least look at it and maybe get some clue.
Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Tinkerman

Is the timing gear cover off the vehicle with the seal still in it or are you trying to get at the cover with seal still attached to the engine?

Mornin Harry, the cover is off the engine, Cover has been bead blasted and primed. I didn't want to get too enthusiastic with pry bars and such until I heard someone elses experience.

When I removed the timing cover seal I used a small ball peen hammer flat side and a brass punch angled at a fortyfive to an edge on one side. A regular brass punch should work as well. I just tapped the seal edge slowly and evenly around the edge with the hammer/punch continuously following the edge around so as not to warp the seal or damage the cover. The seal came out real easy so there's no need to pound on it. I then cleaned the cover seal seat area and inspected. The new seal was then pressed into the cover by hand evenly until it would not go in any lower. The new seal almost went all the way in by hand. I then tapped the new seal into place evenly all the way around with the same ball peen hammer flat side until the seal was fully seated in the cover. Tap gently so you do not distort the seal or cover. You can also use a large socket flat side down to tap the seal into place. I guess you could also use a three or two fingered slammer puller to pop the seal out but I'm just use to doing it this way. I can usually have the seal out in the time it takes just to get the puller together. Please be sure to wear some eye protection when hitting hammers to punch's though. You never know when a metal chip is going to go flying and where.
