Timing Cover Sound Insulation

Does anyone know what material was that used for the sound deadener on the TR6 timing chain cover?
If not how about a substitute?

Roman, are you sure that the TR6 had this stuff on the timing chain cover. I know some earlier TRs had this gunk on them, but I have never seen a 6 with it. (Could be that the many that I have seen have all had it removed!)

I know you are not confusing the everpresent oil leaks/road grime mixture that oft is coating many a TR6 engine.

Roman:

When I bought my '74 TR6 it had the original sound deadening on the front cover. It looked like a big glop of roofing tar or undercoating. Sometime in the last 16 years, the surface rust on the cover won out and the sound deadening fell off.

I certainly don't notice it not being there, and I personally wouldn't want to put a glop of tar on a shiny rebuilt engine.

So that's what that stuff is! I always assumed it was some sort of fungus that had taken hold of the engine. Yes, the original engine on my '71 TR6 had this substance on the timing cover. It was not replaced during the rebuild.

I think 'some's the key word there. There are authoritative sources that claim they all had it but I don't think so.

Neither of my 4-cylinder TRs have it -- in one case I can't imagine anyone would go to the trouble of removing it (they never went to any trouble to maintain anything on that car) and the other is very close to original in all other respects.

The stuff has been described (by a Standard employee) as looking like cake icing that was applied with a wooden spoon by a man wearing a blindfold. Anyway, I don't miss it.

My cover still had it until yesterday when I removed the gunk so that I could put it into a hot tank. Several people told me that you should put something back in its place because if you don't that you will hear the chain clatter. I guess from some of the posts here that it is not the case. I suppose I will repaint the cover and leave the sound deadener off and see what happens.
Thanks
