MGB Steering wheel diameter? 74 MGB

What is the diameter of a '74 MGB's steering wheel? Would an inch smaller than this be sufficient for more thigh room, or should I consider two inches smaller? (As it is, the wheel will restrict leg movement.)

Thank you. I will be adding aforementioned '74 1/2 MGB to the garage behind her, soon! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think the stock is 16" or so. I currently have a 13" wood wheel on mine and just sold a 14" moto lita wheel. The 13" gives a ton of leg room and it's a thicker wheel so itā€™s nice in the hands. The 14" moto lita was about the right diameter I was looking for but was very thin much like the stock wheel and didn't feel as nice. For my taste if I could find a wheel that's the same thickness as the 13" is a 14 or 15" wheel it would be nirvana. The 13ā€ was about 1.5 times as thick as the moto lita.

Hmm very useful information, Stewart, thanks!

(Very slick looking MG you have there, by the way. Caught my eye in another thread, too.)

I like the sound of a "ton of leg room," but the thickness is important, too. I'll be looking at the 13 and 14" Motolita wheels closely..

I have a smaller diameter steering wheel than stock one in my B. I like the extra leg and elbow room. It's a Mountney wheel that has a thick rim. What I don't like about it is the metal finish scratches easily.

I use 14" MotoLita's but have just purchased 2 14" Trophy's from Moss...they're lighter than the MotoLita....both give better knee room &, because they're not dished like the original, provide more room between hands & stalk switches

& the Trophy's are less expensive than the MotoLita's

I've had a 14" wood "Personal" since 1970 that has been on three B's. The diameter is about right for what I consider optimal leverage. 13's require a bit too much "wrassling" at lower speed, the stock ones are so big they are a pain as to legroom on ingress/egress. That's my take on it. I kinda used to be Colin Chapman's "average" driver: 5'10", 145... That was BB -- Before Beer. Bit over that now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

heh... yeah, that's sounds like me too. 5'10" 150... BB...

anywho, my car came with a 15" LaCarre leather wrapped wheel. Has a nice feel to it; nice and meatie. Unfortunately, the size (which I always thought look disproportionately large) gives me minor interfearance while driving. My thigh sometimes hits the bottom of the wheel when I "heel-toe". Getting in and out isn't too bad, IMO, but I can certianly see it being a bit easier with a slightly smaller wheel.

A 14" wheel is on my "Iwanna" list, but it's pretty far down; have other things that need tending to to make the car more mechanically and emissions sound.
