Standard clearance mainshaft of the transmission ?

Hello @ all,

does someone know, how much radial clearance for the end of the mainshaft of a transmission is usual ?
I think some slackness is normal, because the main bearing is far away and to balance and compensate the tolerances between engine and transmission. But how much ? 0,05mm to 0,15mm on the end point ?

Here is a pic with the shaft what I mean. ( out of the www, not my transmission)

Thank you in advance.

Bye michel- who feel it like a hero, because I remove on weekend engine and transmission.

I do not know the value offhand, but I do know that all the BMC xmsn's I've ever pulled do have a fair amount.

I would think that too much play would be evident by wear in the vicinity of the pilot bearing (on the 1st Motion Shaft, where it rides inside the engine's crankshaft).

Hello Randy,

thank you for your feedback. I need not the absolutely dimension. I would like to get a feeling for what is good and what is wrap. The axial play is = 0. The radial play on the end of the shaft is aprox. 0,2.( I did not measured) Today evening I will try to measure the play. For me sounds it is ok, or normal.

Edit: I measured the play it is definitly axial 0mm and radial +/-0,15mm (= 0,3mm) I think it is ok , what did the community say to this result ?

Thanks Michel- who like this competent forum

Hello germamichel,

I don't think there has ever been a dimention given for the end movement of the front of the shaft.

Any amount of play in the bearing race even from new will be multiplied by a factor of about 12 because it's about that distance from the bearing to the end of the shaft. Sorry but I don't have a shaft in front of me to measure how long it is I'm only going on memory. Even a new bearing has quite a lot of free play in it.

It shouldn't be a problem because the front of the shaft is located in the bush in the end of the crankshaft. If you want you could measure the outside diameter of the shaft at the front then compare it to the inside diameter of the bush That will tell you how much clearance there is but then, there isn't a tolerance given for this dimention either so you could go on and on.

Regards,

bundyrum.
