spin on adaptor wont break free

I am trying to get a spin on oil filter adapter loose from the Puralator style filter head so I can clean the assembly and replace all orings. Has anyone every had trouble removing the adapter from the filter head? I have removed the retaining nut and soaked the assembly in solvent, but still it does not budge. Is there something other than the retaining nut that hold it on the filter head?

Thanks,

Greg

Greg,

Just the centre nut holds the adaptor on and takes the spin on filter, at least on the ones I've seen.

If the whole thing's off the car, try dropping it in very hot water to expand the ally, then hold one part safely as best you can, and tap the other with a block of wood. I haven't done this myself, so just check if it's a workable suggestion.

They had a reputation for leaking oil, so hoping some PO hasn't araldited the adaptor on.

Good luck,

Viv.

Hi Greg,

I agree with Viv that there really should`nt be much of a problem but I guess there is!

Soak as mentioned above & flood with WD40 or equiv. Something has to give at that point.

I`m not certain but; "Which way does the thread go"? RH or LH thd? When your wrenching the nut; You may just be going the wrong direction and tightening it? I suspect you probably already have tried this?

Best Wishes,

Russ

Greg-

I agree, the center nut is holding the adaptor on - it must be stuck to the o-ring seals, or maybe have a slight interference fit with the head itself. I'd try a strap wrench if you have one and see if it'll coax off.

Possibly a plastic headed hammer, so as to not crack the aluminum housing when gently persuading it to come loose?

I wanted to make sure there was not another fastner I did not know about before I started hammering away on that no longer available filter head.

I suspect a 20 year old O ring is holding it all together.

thanks

My O-ring on my TR6 adapter was pretty old too. I had to sit in my friends newly poured drive way with the car idling for a few minutes before he convinced me that my car was dripping oil. Apparently it leaked only when idling for long periods, and made a big puddle in his driveway. Anyway, when I got a new o-ring, the unit came off easily. My guess is that someone used some gasket goop on the threads or something. -but I don't always guess that good.

I had to chuckle at that Tex. It remimded me of when I had the pleasure of owning a Porsche 356sc. After I rebuilt the engine due to a broken piston ring, I had a pushrod tube that had a pretty good leak (reused the old ones).
It wasn't a problem for me, but whenever I'd stop and visit my uncle, Aunt Bobbie would rush out into her driveway with a piece of cardboard she kept handy to slide under the car. The front of the car!
