Spare tire on boot

There is a BT7 (if I remember) on Ebay with the spare on the boot lid. I'm just curious, did they mount a spare hub to the lid? I'm not sure it would take the weight.

I wonder if you are thinking of the rally lid. I believe that was so racers could carry two spares in the trunk.

Hi Rich,
So to get back to your original question, I'd have my doubts too. Obviously, they've done it. The question is what (if any) were the modifications. In my mind, the two weak spots are the hinges and the prop rod. The hinges have only a single bolt going into an un-reinforced shroud. If you remember an old post of mine, the shroud was flexing with just the trunk lid itself. The prop rod is so far off center that the lid hangs down on the opposite side. I'd think adding gas struts to both sides <span style="font-style: italic">could</span> fix that issue. Probably the safest thing would be to remove the tire from the car every time you want access to the trunk. A big hassle if you ask me.

Neither one of those issues enters into the equation IF the top is on.
You cannot open the boot lid without removing the external spare!
Look at the clearance to the rear glass!

You may be right, but I refuse to believe someone would engineer a calamity like that. :laugh: I suppose if they don't have a tire inside, they've gained storage space in the cockpit and don't need to get in the trunk very ofter.

Maybe the external spare knockoff mallet is in a special bracket under the dash, too?

Yes, with two (2) spare tires on top of it. While not shown often, in at least one of my Healey books, there's a picture with the "boot" open (no cable to limit lift height, it's laying all the way up against the hdtp window).
