replaving bush and bearing on generator ?

Hey all,
As I try to follow the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rule, before I consider replacing the bronze bush and bearing on my 100M generator, thought I would ask the group if this is as simple as it seems from the Haynes workshop manual. Since it looks relatively easy, and it's a Healey, I am sure it will be anything but so that's my question. Get some occasional minor bearing or bush noise from the generator but not bad. Know it needs to be attended to but after dealing with a OD that went kaput this winter, a minor accident, don't know if I'm up to any more problems that can maybe be put off for a bit. Thanks in advance for advice, sympathy, etc !
Regards,
Mike

Had it done for my BJ8 after the thing went hot
It was expensive :-/

Better look at it before it is "kaput"

Well Mike test the bush fit on the end of the shaft when you get it apart. If it isnt sloppy you can let it alone . If it has to be removed take it to a machine shop and have bush replaced.

Replacing the bearing is an average DIY task.

Hi Mike
I have just done mine on my 100/6. I didn't find it difficult but if your starter is the same (m418 i think) you will have to remove the bearing cage on the front. It's held on with three long rivets. Drill the ends off and drift them out. I had some to replace them, but you could use long round head bolts and peen the ends over. The bush on the other end is also easy to fit. Don't forget to soak it in oil for 24 hours first. I replaced both of these and the brushes and the parts didn't cost much. Haven't tested it yet but it motors, so I guess all is good.

I'm sure you chaps will be depressed to hear that an exchange generator from my local motor factors is £27 or about $40. They are brand new! I'd still rather live in the States though.

Thanks all for the feedback. Sounds like the bearing is not much to deal with but bush could be more problematic. I'll get back after I decide to bend my " ain't broke " rule and get into it.

Mike

I say ole chap if that includes Vat it is a bargain. Course now if you want to move house put the Healey on a RORO and come on over--Keoke:cheers:

one thing you might onsider for the bronze bushing is to, with the generator apart, put some oil in the bushing recess and allow the bronze to soak it up. Odds are it's probably dry and as long as not worn to a loose fit on the shaft this will help.

Decided after not being able to get the pulley off to replace the bearing to just take it in to a local auto electrical repair shop and for $70.00 have them rebuild the generator ! At least I can still basically follow my "if it ain't broke" rule since I'm not messing with it !
