You can also buy a serviceable bushing puller on Amazon for $17, or get a loaner from one of the auto part stores. It does make the removal much easier. And, even a cheap puller will last a lifetime with care.
I enjoy various You Tube videos on removing pilot bushings. The bolt and screwdriver seems to be a good method, as does threading the bushing for a bolt, but I would be careful using a hammer to hit a rod or bolt inserted into the pilot bushing against soggy bread or grease (a good amount of the hit is taken by the crankshaft - especially before the bushing starts to move).
For the same reason, I would be careful driving a new, tight bushing into the end of the crankshaft with a hammer. IMO, its worth spending $20 on a inexpensive HF bushing pusher (or making one) that wont stress the bearings and makes it simple to accurately set the pilot bushing depth.
