Rear wheel fenders

are the fenders on 1970s mgbs different from my 1968 mgb? I was looking at cars on the internet and it seemed like their rear fender did not cover the top part of the tire like mine does. Am I crazy?

No the fenders are not different. Here's a few idea's about what you are seeing.

-In 1975 MG raised the ride height of the car 1.5"

-New rear leaf springs sold by some suppliers have been known to give our cars a '60s muscle car stance (Big drag tires)

-The cars could have sagging rear springs, sometimes cause the car to have a 1-2" reduction in rear ride height.

As a reference my car ('74 MGB) sits on 14" wire wheels (175/70 tires) and from the ground to the bottom of the chrome strip measures 25" at all four corners. It has the original front springs and a set of used '74 MGB GT rear springs. Just an edjucated guess but I would say a chrome bumper car with new springs at all four corners should sit At a maximum of 26" in front and maybe a little higher in the rear.

Don't forget that a 185/70 series tire would make a little difference in the ride height figures.

I measured my ride height and it was 25" all around. So I should just order leaf springs from a later model MG and that will raise my rear ride height so the fender won't cover the wheel?

Well it's not like raising the rear end 1" is going to throw off the handling too perversely. I also heard that doing a v8 conversion ruins the handling, but I see that people on this site have v8 mg's also.

I have been thinking about this too...last winter, I rebuilt the front end, new spings and rebuilt shocks, etc. Now the front end sits 3/4 inch higher, but the rear end looks even lower...not quite a lowrider, but noticeable. I am going to do something and have been wondering if the 6 leaf springs will bring it back to where it belongs or if the 7 leaf springs will make it too high, or too stiff. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I am leaning toward keeping it orginal as much as possible. But then if you want to raise it slightly, I am sure that you can do that with a lift shackle...I am sure someone makes a kit for an MGB somewhere /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
