got a line on one REALLY cheap - does need a little work but it apparently runs. I know it's not considered a real Porsche by some but aside from that any thought? and advice? anything to look for?

thanks all

Doc E is a certified Porsche techie, and so he is well-qualified to comment, but from what I can gather it was a worthy enough car, and parts are VW so are much less expensive.

I'm no fan of the 924 (prefer the 928 of course) but try to have it looked over by someone local in the know about such things.

But with regards to it not being a real Porsche? Well thats true - its really an Audi/Volkswagen. But don’t let its humble pedigree fool ya. Porsche owns a lot to that little car along with it’s siblings the 944 and the 968 who collectively saved Porsche’s bacon in those lean years.

Dang - that's probably the nicest thing I've ever said about a 924.

Anyway I'll give you some advice and this'll go for pretty much any P-car out there. Try to find as nice a one as you can. You'll pay more money up front and be happier in the long run.

But with Porsche - VW deal I guess it will be.

My life has been limited to 911's and 944t, sorry, Doc is the man on this one.

The early 924s were Audi engined. Much later, Porsche reintroduced the 924 as a 'budget' 944. It had 944 running gear, but the non-flared body. What year are you looking at?

I'd say that if it was free, it's overpriced. Those cars are expensive to refurbish, and you can buy good ones for far less than it would cost to make that a decent runner. Run away!

I have to agree - that looks like a lot of time & money.

But if you already owned on it might be worth it if you wanted a parts car.

I've been limited in my access to the 'net for the last five days so didn't get too deep into BCF. Sorry I didn't see this earlier.

JP, I'd have to agree with Eric. That one is lookin' more like Poi$on than Porsche. And if he can find a (good) rear glass for $100, he needs to go into business sellin' 'em. The BEST parts of that thing are all the Bosch CIS injection system bits. All "Rattle & Shake". Money Pit material. Everything in the interior is plastic, most of it likely loose, split or broken... I'd be STUNNED if the dashpad were in any shape at all.

When they were NEW they were cheesy, IMO. And I helped field one for SCCA racing, my brother mistakenly bought one a few years ago against my councel... feh. It ran. That's as much as I'll say about it.

Best MP, Run Away!!! Early 924's are total crap. The "good" 924 is the "S". It's the 944 without the fender bulges. I guess about the time they were going to replace the 24 with the 44 they had a bunch of spare 24 bodies. So they put the 44 drive train in them and called them the "924S". Everything swaps between them (24S/44) 'cept for some of the body parts and wheels. I know this first hand. Early 24's are bastard cars and hard to find parts for.(running gear, but most everything else swaps with the "S") If it was an "S" I'd say cool. This one I'd pass on. Just my 2cents...

So, y'all don't need to be ambiguous, say what you mean!

I get it - and it's what I knew - it's just that constant tug of cra**y cars that is the bane of my existence :nonod: No more (till next time)
