Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

I just picked this up from the Triumph forum: GM has discontinued the distribution of EOS. That makes sense since the largest consumer the modern car owner no longer needs it. However, since STP contains ZDDP the 4 cylinder stuff in the blue bottle is the best but the red bottle is usable also.--Fwiw--Keoke

Re: Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

Hi Keoke,
You might find this PDF intereresting. Apparently EOS is still available as an AC Delco product. There is some question whether it is still the old formulation or something different.

Re: Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

Keoke, if you picked that up from the Triumph forum, you must have missed this, or it was posted after you looked.

I purchased a case of EOS last year from https://www.gmpartsdirect.com - Old GM EOS p/n 1052367

And now their web site states:

"Gm has reinstated this EOS and the new number is 88862586. Currently it is not yet available but will be soon! Please email us before ordering to insure we can supply you."

Re: Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

Sheesh.

If you REALLY want the benefits of the old API oils before they changed to SI or later ratings(where they removed all of the ZDDP to appease the manufacturers). Without all the running around just go down to your friendly, nearby motorcycle shop. I use Yamaha oil, costs 4 a quart and it is fully equipped with ZDDP in it. The feds haven't gotten around mandating catalytic convertors for all motorcycle owners yet, so the Bike Mfr's do NOT have to obey API's guidelines. Being that most bikes use mechanical valve actuation the necessity of protective additives in the oil is almost a given.

Just use motorcycle oil.

Re: Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

Yep that is good news too Ron, and we already use their fork oil in our shock absorbers.OTOH, most racing oils are still OK such as Valvoline VR1 and others.---' Keoki '

Re: Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

Keoke Check out Shell-Rotella oils. They carry the API `CC` Diesel usage classification which means it still contains ZDDP additive because diesel fuel injector housings utilize flat follower-camshaft concept for activation. I purchased some HD-30 at Walmart.

Re: Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

Hey DJ, might wanna do an update check on Rotella. Just because it's CC doesn't always(usually so, but not always) mean it's got ZDDP.. Shell has been cutting back considerably on their additive formulation. I understand they're using a different anti-wear additive(can't remember the name of it right now). But they ARE getting away from ZDDP in their automotive and truck products.

Re: Oil ZDDP Additive EOS

I picked up some Chevron Delo 400 (Diesel) 30wt for break-in oil with the old oil designations on the package (not the newer energy efficient variety). Also called Delta cams for their recommendation and they said to use Crane Cams, Super Lube Break-in Concentrate which I found on-line.
