While I am sure this has been commented on many times, I want to get a few comments from the knowledge-base. Motor rebuilt over 4 years ago, sitting and waiting for the project to catch up. Finally added radiator water and atached battery to this motor past weekend and ran starter for first time. 4-6 sessions of 1 to 2 minutes. Cranks smoothly, I am squirting oil into cylinders, and watching oil line to oli-pressure guage for some sign .... nada. I am assuming that if dizzy is turning, it's drive is running oil pump as well. Will an oil pump prime itself over time, or do I need to perform some other proceedure? Worried about cam with repeated attempts. So close ....

Try these PreLube instructions.

My engine has been overhauled and I'm presently awaiting my BJ8 to come back from the Paint/Body shop. I will be using a container that I'll put the oil in and then pressurize it and stick the hose in the oil filter hole before starting it.

It there's interest in what the set-up looks like I'll take a few photos and post them.

Recently re-started my BN2 after a 3 year period of restoration. Engine was not rebuilt as it performed perfectly before. Drained the oil for a while and when I attempted to restart it would not build oil pressure. I have built two six cylinders and they self primed rather easily. The four was supposed to do the same as the pump sits down in the oil. After minutes of turning, no oil pressure. Dropped the pan to make sure nothing was wrong with the pump or pressure relief valves, still nothing. Dropped pan again and this time packed the pump with Vaseline and put it back together. This time instant oil pressure! Pressure builds right up every time I start it now just like it is supposed to.

I would not start it until you build pressure by running the starter.
