If I were gonna get rid of my MG's for another car, your model would be the one - congrats! Looks great!

Oh, got any photos of the dash?

Any ideas?

Some of the early cars had gold heads from the factor (I think this was only one the ealy 3.8 cars). Many people like the look of that and paint their heads gold after the fact. I suspect that was the case with your car. I am farily certain it should be plain aluminium color originally. The non-factory gold head paint job is a fairly common modification on these cars, thought wouldn't win any points in a concours show.

Great looking car and welcome to the world of E-Type lovers! Concerning the color of your cylinder head, the first 1500 or so engines had a pumpkin colored head which changed to the familiar gold colored until part way through the 67 model year. At that point they became plain unpainted aluminum.

Hello all,
Jaguar cars painted the cylinder heads of XK engines a variety of colours depending on the version. Gold is correct for the 3.8 and 4.2 E Type with smooth cam covers, later ribbed cam cover engines should be unpainted. Also gold heads were used on the XK150S triple carburettor engines, and on the MK 10 and 420G saloons.

Not always. My 67 OTS with smooth cam covers did not have a painted head originally (I have since painted it however).

Right you are Basil. At this late date, with few cars in the hands of the original owners, I'm afraid that we'll never be able to track down when the change came. The pumpkin color on the XK150 3.8S head carried over to the early E-Types to at least engine # R2512.
