MGB MGB LE rim color question

Picked up a B with LE rims on it. The clear coat is flaking and the color is faded. What is the color of the dark part (black, graphite, charcoal?). Anyone found a good match in a rattle can. What is the easiest way to remove the clearcoat (sanding is taking forever). I tried Dawn Power Dissolver, but it didn't do anything.

If the "Dawn" hasn't touched it, you're down to chem stripper or hunt up a shop with a sand blaster.

I would chemically strip them.

I blasted my first set of LE wheels. Never again. Took forever to polish them back.

The second set I did I chemically stripped them. Took about 25% of the time

They should be an dark argent grey. Some people paint them black (I personally don't like), and some paint them body color (looks a bit weird, but not terrible).

The BEST paint match I could find for the grey was eastwood's ralley grey wheel paint https://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=97&itemType=PRODUCT . Also pick up their 'clear coat for painted surfaces' clearcoat https://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=23985&itemType=PRODUCT

came out pretty good I think!

Looks like th' furry whosis there approves of all that work!

The chem-strip sounds like the better way. Messy, but less "end" work.

Great tip on the paint match, too. I'd never have thought of Eastwood. Did ya clear-coat the whole wheel afterwards?

Yup Zoe liked to get in the way (she isn't that bright). Surprised she didn't get cleared too!!

I used 'aircraft' stripper from autozone. Was a bit messy, but not as bad as I thought it would be. FAR better in every respect.

The wheels were originally cleared (you can see it in the first pic). After clearing them, they did look better. Plus should cut the time before they corrode again. The clear makes it far easier to clean as well. Just spritz some wheel cleaner on, lightly clean, wash off.

I painted and cleared the entire wheel (front and back) on the first set). The second set I left the back alone and just did the front.

The color match is surprisingly good. Good quality paint for a rattle can.

Thanks Phantom,
You are 100% correct about chemically stripping the rims. Sandblasting is too harsh. How did you polish the metal? Isn't masking them off a pain in the rear?
