Mahle piston and liner kit ??

Does anyone know where to purchase the Mahle piston and liner kit for a TR3A? TRF has had them on backorder for 2 months. I have been told that this is the best kit use on a rebuild.

Thanks,

Murray

I don't know if Ken Gillanders at British Frame & Engine has them, but he does have piston and liner sets. He's known for stocking quality parts and knows TR engines inside and out. It would be worth a call. Wonderful guy to talk to.

As far as the Mahle's go, that's what I put into my TR3, but I got them from TRF a couple of years ago when they had a sale on them. Whether they are the best, that I couldn't tell you, but Ken would know how they stack up.

I just installed a new set of pistons and liners from Moss. They look fantastic. And the arrived in two days.

Mahle are very well known in the Porsche and BMW crowd. They make a high quality product.

Was that a Country brand set? There have been good reports on Country brand piston and liner sets on the UK TR Register forum, despite their cheaper price.

If you can't do it yourself, I would have someone mic whatever brand of piston and liner set you buy. I sent a set back years ago, it was way out of spec, worse than the worn out ones I was replacing. Ended up buying Mahle from BFE.

Actually, I'm not sure what brand my replacements were. I just got the complete 87mm set they offered. The pistons are stamped 040, which I thought was a little odd. They seemed pretty good quality to me, but I'm no expert.

87 mm is the same as 86 mm + .040", give or take a gnat's eyebrow.

You could also call TRF and ask if they carry another brand that is as good or better than Mahle.

Back in the good old days I ordered a set from Victoria British and was very pleased to get genuine Mahle brand pistons and liners. I don't know if that is what they stock now (this was a long time ago) but certainly worth a try (to call them and see if they can tell you what they have in stock now)

Dealing with Vic Brit can be frustrating. On the phone, your dealing with order takers that don't know crap about a car. I could never get a right answer from any of them. Some I can't even understand what there saying, (Don't know where they came from, I can only guess). That was a while back and I don't deal with them anymore. If I wanted a Vic Brit part, I would go to Tony at www.theautoist.com . You'll get the part cheaper and Tony knows what he's talking about. He's a Vic Brit, Engel and Moss dealer. JMHO. PJ
