We used to live in Niceville. Great place. My 13-yr old graduated from Happyland Preschool in Niceville, FL--what a great way to start!

funny how many of us are familiar with that area... Grew up mostly in the Ft Walton Beach/Shalimar area myself, with a couple of years dashed in from Crestview. I studied karate at a dojo in Niceville for a long time; had an ex-Marine as our Shihan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

My hubby was the Public Works Director for FWB back in '97 and '98. Beautiful white sand beaches, why did we leave? Always funny when I hear someone around here (Hilton Head) talk about the beach--it's nice and all, but it can never compare to that perfect sugar sand down on the Redneck Riviera.

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

yeah, that's true. I've never been any place that had beach sand to compare to that area. Okinawa had nice white beaches, but the sand was wicked course due to the crushed shell nature of their beaches. Out here in SoCal, the sand seems to vary from a off-white gray to an off white beige, people just look at me funny when I tell them I've seen whiter sand....

They never get it until they go.

Checked out your site--LOVE the video shot on the aircraft carrier. Makes you proud to be American. Bunch of guys out their risking their necks for us, yet still able to have some fun amidst the danger. Heroes come in many shapes and sizes, but they obviously all like to ROCK!

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Oops--sorry to the gals out there (myself included). Should read "Bunch of guys AND gals out there..." Hopefully I have redeemed myself, Janel.

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Kandace - don't rush too quickly to buy the first MGB you see...& definitely don't jump out & buy something you don't think he'd like....there are tons of good ones out there...you're getting tossed so many options that you might be getting heady - or at least getting an MGB rush....don't!! & on every BBS I go to, people are being asked to run here & there to look at MG's for you - MG's that probably aren't anywhere near what he'd want!

Some of us know alot about these cars & have been playing with them for most of our lives - others of us just jumped into the hobby with both feet and are still learning...before you take any ill-conceived (though genuinely offered) advice from one of us, you probably need to figure out whether he wants a chrome or rubber bumper, whether he wants to jump in & drive or tinker, how far you want to search from home for a car....&, regardless of what you decide, don't buy it until somebody who has owned more than a couple of MG's looks it over for you - even if you have to pay an appraiser to do so....

My daughter recently gave her husband a new Lexus for his birthday - she knew which one he wanted (the new LS350 or some such number) & that they weren't even at the dealers yet, they were so new....she even knew the colors he wanted....so, she gave him the bill of sale (or whatever you get from a dealer when you buy a new car), the sales brochure & name of ship it was en route to the US on....I think he had more fun tracking it from Japan to Florida to B'ham & actually picking it up than were he driving it....maybe you could give him a copy of The Original MGB with a "gift certificate" worth up to $7,500 for him to pick the MG of his choosing....that way you bot could take a few short weekend trips to look them over!

Just my 2-cents worth, FWIW.

Gee, where'd I hear that before?

.....& you'll hear me say it over & over & over - especially to people buying their first or second MG....

Heed me or not - I don't really care....however, I've owned more MG's than probably anybody in the world; & I'd safely bet on that fact!

...& even I have an old push button MGB sitting under a shed out back to constantly remind me to do exactly what I'm recommending she (& others) do (yep, even theAutoist got burned once)

So, do as you see fit but my advice still stands: tread cautiously...there are too many good ones out there to jump on the first one you find! & make sure the people giving advice have the expertise to back it up (there are lots of people who know these cars inside & out & some who think they do but haven't a clue!)

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Umm, Tony. I was referring to the fact that I mentioned not rushing into a purchase a while back in the post. And suggested buying some little MG bits for the holiday with an IOU.

Great minds think alike I suppose. Prolly the only thing we have agreed on in our lives.

Oh wait, we did agree on something once this year. And we did agree I needed Binabox!

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Tony,

You're exactly right. It's hard to pick something this important for someone without actually asking them what they want. The advice has been wonderful, and I've turned down the offers (except for my aunt's car) by kind folks to go and look at prospective cars. My aunt's definitely interests me, even though the bumpers are rubber, because I know the history, and they're family. Makes a difference. So earlier today, I had a chat with Mark and told him of my diabolical plan. He about fell over. Then he smiled. Last time he smiled like that was when our youngest was born. His preference is a chrome bumper B, but he sees the value in looking at my aunt's. And he agrees with Jaybird--if it's in good condition, it would be a great starter B that we could maybe sell someday to get the one he really wants.

Anyway, I really appreciate the help and advice. You all sure know how to make a girl feel welcome. For now, I think our best bet is to see my aunt's B. If anyone's near Elizabethtown KY and wants to go with, let me know. Thanks!

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

I'll be going through there in a few days en route to Louisville....don't know your schedule but it'll be a weekday.

If you buy it, we can show him how to convert it to chrome bumper specs - the proper way! &, its not real expensive (& you don't need one of the high dollar kits either!)

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Much obliged. My schedule is flexible, just let me know and we'll see. What's in Louisville (just curious, I'm from there.)

I have never actually sold any of my LBCs.
So I have never experienced sellers regret.

Dad sold his MGA a couple of years before I was born.
(He still talks about it occasionally & that was 44 years ago)

The whole "keep it in the family" aspect of this purchase may turn out to be more of a big deal w/ your Auntie than she is letting on, or knows yet.

Besides, he may, in the future decide to get a CB one.
That leaves YOU w/ a sorted car with familial "pedigree". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Hi again Kandace,Tonys advice about buying is just about spot on. I can only add, that there are reasons that people have preferences for chrome vs rubber bumpers. Get what you want and dont compromise. I usually dont come up here to the MG site much, I hang around the Horsepower TR site. he,he. Tony,if I may ask, about how many MG's have you owned? Just looking to compare sicknesse's.

Well, right now there are 17 or 18 in my garage & another 10 or 12 outside under sheds....at one time there were 50 in my "MG Graveyard" but I'm cutting back there....over the years, I've probably bought & sold more than 200 MG's (so far this year, 23!) plus the occasional Jaguar, Austin Healey, Morris Minor, & Triumph plus other marques.....sick, sick, sick & there's no cure!

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Well, ya probably got me beat in MG's, but total Brits,!!!! your in my rear view mirror. Throw in Italian,and... chaio baby. Just a thought,....but,..what if we would have spent the time in the library instead?
