Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one look?

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Throw in Italian,and... chaio baby

Well, I have owned Alfa Romeo's, Lancia's & Fiat's.....my Lancia HPE was probably one of my favorite cars!....plus I've owned several different BMW's, Mercedes (still have 2) & VW's (still have 2).

My philosophy is the guy who dies with the most toys wins - & I'm forever in second place!

Want to learn, so what should I look for in these photos?

He doesn't like yellow?

And he does not seem to like touching or looking at engines as much as I do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

I only needed to look at 1 photo to know its not worth the reserve - he didn't do the engine compartment which tells me everything else he did is also suspect....see, cars will tell you their own story regardless of what an owner tries to say....this one is saying, "I do have a new makeover but underneath there are a few dimples you'll have to work out." That engine's not been touched! Back away slowly...though if he'd drop it to 5K then it'd possibly be a worth yanking the engine.

Bet now that those photos are up some of the bidders will think about retracting their bids - & the auction will slow to a halt.

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Thanks for the lesson. One more question (and don't laugh): What are the rocker panels and why do they tend to rust so much?

Update--went to Knowledge Base and found out it's the sills. Still confused though. Does the phrase tabula rasa sound familiar???

hehehehe....your "blank slate" is filling quite nicely!

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Thanks--long way to go! What exactly are sills? Are they the ledges underneath car doors? (Again, try to keep your laughter to a minumum...)

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Yes, and they keep your car from folding in the middle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

I don't think anyone's laughing - we're all impressed with a lady who's willing to learn about cars! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Yes, sills are the area of the body beneath the car door.

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

& if a car needs bodywork anywhere near them - run away!

MG's are unibody vehicles which means they do not have a separate frame underneath for strength...the body itself carries all the strength in its longitudinal & horizontal pieces...the sills are the main longitudinal pieces & are made up of 3 interior pieces plus the rocker that covers them.

You do not want to have to cut into those if at all possible...actually, where I live, any car that needs sill repairs automatically becomes a parts car.

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Why would anyone laugh?...the only reason some people know more is that they were told or asked those same questions at an earlier date.
Some know lots and some, like myself, have yet to learn but we all love our Little British Cars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grouphug.gif

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

You guys are great--guess I'm just used to growing up w/2 brothers whose mission in life was to tease me (in a good way!)

Can you tell me why the sills tend to rust so much? Is it from water, salt, etc. coming up from road?

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Kandace...there's no way to keep moisture out of the sills & the drain holes clog over time so it can't get out.

For Example: Once each year a person should pull the splash panels up inside the front fenders & wash out the area behind it....that helps keep the front of the rockers clean....a person should also clean out the holes underneath the sills

maintenance...maintenance...maintenance

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

ah, but if you're not actually fixing, repairing, or replacing damaged parts, it's not just "maintenance", it's "Preventative Maintenance"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Which would be the act of maintaining the current state of things in an attempt to prevent something worse (and potentially much more expensive) from happening. For example, you should change the oil in you daily driven car every 3000 miles (or 3 months) to keep the engine in good health. If you never change your oil, well, let's just say that a new engine costs a bit more than 4 quarts of oil and a new filter.

So in today's lesson, we've learned that "PM'ing" is good. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Yep, lack of PM - according to the owner's manual, not what a person is accustomed to doing on an old Chevy - is necessary....& the lack thereof is the reason most MG's rust away!

How many of you actually remove the splash panels & wash out the area behind them? How many run coat hangers up inside the bottom holes in the sill (or, for that matter, in the heater box drain tube?

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

I just rinsed out behind the splash panels on my B not too long ago. I think I found enough dirt to fill a flower pot back there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Still need to do the coat hanger bit though. What's the deal with that bulb at the bottom of the heater box drain tube?

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Changing the oil isn't preventative maintenance. It's required or routine maintenance. Preventative maintenance is refurbishing parts before they wear out or fail, or before the time specified by the factory.

I've learned to be VERY careful about preventative maintenance. It can cause perfectly good parts to wear out more quickly / fail sooner. Generally, if things are working, I literally don't touch them unless I see good reason to. "Fiddling" can make a good car unreliable!

Re: Looking to buy my 1st B--how does this one loo

Being a woman has nothing to do with it. There are a ton of guys who don't know anything about rust.
