How to tell Dunlop or Dayton

I just bought a used set of 72 spoke wheels for my Healey (forget that I said they look busy in another thread, I changed my mind).

How can I tell if they are Daytons or Dunlops? There is no rust, so I can't tell from that. Any obvious way?

From the photo where they are mounted on the car, I believe they are Daylops. A hybrid of Dayton/Dunlop.

Sorry, can't offer any help here.

Man o man, look at that offset.

You most likely have the wheel placed against the other in your photo, But I'll tell you, I've seen some cars driving around with wheels that stick out that far.

HA, it does make it look like I have very wide rims back there. Maybe I should get low profile tires as well!

Hi Patton, This is not gospel, however I do not think Dulop builds that wheel in chrome only a painted version.---Fwiw---Keoke-?

The candy cane on the hood is certainly at odds with the way the rear wheel looks. I guess duellies are fairly common in Texas? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

It's hard to tell if they are dunlops or daytons, but my guess is dunlops.

I'd like to ask, is the white and pink jeep in the bottom of your photo for sale? That looks like a fun piece of equipment.

I just haven't figured out the best place to put the gun rack and the rollbar with the row of KC fog lights. Then it will be a true Texas Healey.

The only reason I really need to know is when/if I get a spare. I'll keep a 48 spoke in the trunk for a while.

You will have to talk to my 5 year old, Zoe. She really likes her Barbie Dream Jeep. The only issue is I disabled the "high" gear so she doesn't run down her little sister. If it stays in "low" the little one has time to get out of the way.

Now that's funny. And to back you up, my brother lives in Texas, and when visiting him, I have seen what you speak of.

Hi Patton,

Is there a reason you need to know or are you just curious?

From the Anderson/Moment book:

"The difference between Dunlop and Dayton is most noticable in the depth of the inner-most recess channel of the rim."

I suppose you could compare a known Dunlop/Dayton with these new wheels. You could also tell if/when you remove the tires as the Daytons should have sealing silicone around the spoke nipples and different edge bead for seating the tubeless tire rim.

I think Moss only carries Dunlop and they do have 72 spoke chromes in their catalog. This clashes with Keoke's post but a quick call to Moss would educate us on what they carry.

Cheers,
John

I got a set of 4, so one day I might want a matching spare.

I will take one to the NTAHC tech session this week and see if I can compare to someone's there. The guy I bought them from doesn't know either where they were purchased or how old the tires are. He just was told they were used for about 50 miles, then taken off.

Opps .. missed the part earlier about the spare. There is a way of determining the manufacture date on the tire. I don't know the codes off-hand but you should be able to search here or on the web. Or just wait a bit and someone will likely offer up the info /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Thanks, I know the old system, but don't know on newer tires. If what I think is the code is the code, they are only a year old! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif They are 195/65's v the 185/70s I have on the car now, so I will have to see if they are OK with the clearance.

I think I also just figured out that they are Daytons as they appear to be tubeless. All good.

Hi Patton, 195 X 65 X 15 tires are as close as you can get to the old hard to find 185 X 70 X 15 tyres. I mean really close.---Keoke

OK , here is the best information I have. The only Chrome WW Dunlop built in the 72 spoke configuration was a "15X5.5 Wheel. This was because at that time Dayton did not make that wheel in Chrome.--Fwiw--Keoke

Dayton will build any wheel size, offset that you may require. I just sold 5 Dunlop Aquajets for $500.00, but they are for dispay only. I would not recomment extended touring on them.
