help on isuzu trooper II starter install

Hello anyone,

So i bought my isuzu trooper II starter frame/part number 17155 (the one that bolts right on) for my 1958 Austin-Healey Sprite Bugeye (948cc A series). I eye balled it to compare it against the original starter. all looked good and similar like it would work without trouble. Unfortunately i'm having trouble "bolt"ing it on? I have a clearance issue in which the starter's flange and bolt that holds the solenoid in place is hitting up against the engine where the oil pan/engine block/and transmission meet.

Has anyone ever tried this or is it just rumor that it bolts right on? I think I might have to either return the starter or get a machine shop to duplicate the original with enough clearance. any comments? please hit me up, thanks

Why would it have a starter solenoid on it. A bugeye does not really have one but for the manual one up near the heater slelf.

Cut the flange off I would think, would like to see a pic.

Orginal starters from autozone or such are only $45 why bother.

Jack, I think he means to solenoid that throws the drive gear out. It doesn't use inertia like the stock starter.

There are two different starters that will fit the same car under the Lester number of 17155.

There is a Nippondenso and also there is a Hitachi NON-gear reduction starter. They both fit the intended application (Izusu) but not both fit all Lucas replacement applications. The Hitachi is probably the no fit. The Nppondenso will not o-clock with the oem type nose and will also have packaging problems. Aftermarket using the Hitachi gear reduction motor and custom noses as well as aftermarket Nippo's are o-clockable but are more $$ than the oe pieces.

I bet you found one at a deal at Pep Boys....chances are it is WashedOff brand, not only the wrong piece but of questionable "rebuiltness".

Got my rebuilt one for $45 at Autozone I think. Next day delivery. It is an orginal starter for LBCs.

i was going for a gear reduction replacement. everything seemed like it would fit. I measured all the significant components with a micrometer. well at any rate, i returned it and got my money back. I actually bought the starter at autozone as well. I guess mine was a rebuilt hitachi with identical part number 17155. I'll be searching for a replacement starter, but i don't want an original LBC. I think my bro is orderin one for me cause he felt bad its a nippondenso rebuilt by brit bits.
