Healey EFI ... q's???

Hi -

I think someone mentioned they have converted their BJ8 to EFI.

I'd like to get some thoughts on this, does it improve mileage, running. What's the expense? AH spare has an EFI kit but it sure is expensive!!

Can't supply you with the answers from 1st hand but it is alledged that fuel economy goes up and performance goes up by large amounts, from memory circa 25 - 30% for both, but as you say, the costs is high, something like £4500.
John Chatham has taken a modified car out for a run and is impressed, so much so, that he says that he is interested in its developement. AH parts advertise with a graph on the back of Revcounter ( our Healey magazine ) and at 4576 revs, power at the rear wheel goes up from just over 80 to just over 95.

Outside of the above. I am very interested if anyone has adapted a megasquirt system to the Healey.

At some point I am probably going to place my Longbridge head, carbs and exhaust manifold on the shelf and upgrade to something. If I can figure out how to keep it reversible, I think I might go EFI instead of just putting a 3000 carb setup in. A megasquirt system will probably cost about the same as buying and rebuilding a set of SU's if I can find a good donor setup.

I looked at the AH Spares video and it appears that they are using an Omex 710 ECU . I don’t know a heck of a lot about fuel injection, but this unit seems to be overkill for the kit they offer. That just drives the cost of the kit way up without utilizing any of the 710s benefits. I’ll stick with my triple Mikunis. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif

Ahh, more power, more speed. Seems I've heard of converting a Jeep Cherokee inline six setup in an AH. Plenty of inline's available there.

Hi guys, I'm the guy Patton mentions. I have a 3000 BJ7 that I have converted to EFI. My webpage HTTP:stevesaustinhealey.com has a video (it's also on You Tube) and the first paper on the Project section explains the EFI conversion/development. I use a GM ECU that will fire two banks of injectors... I believe the Megasquirt ECU just fires one bank but that may have changed in more recent versions. On my Healey 6 we first tried a single batch firing like the Megasquirt but it didn't run well over 3,000 rpm. When we changed to firing it in two banks (Project paper describes this in greater detail) the Healey began running beautifully. This installation could be done in a fashion to make it all reversible..... I started out with this in mind but at some point after it really started running great decided that I would personally never go back to carbs.
