External Mirrors - advice requested

I want to add an outside driver’s side mirror to our BJ7 (roll-up windows!), either on the quarterlight or by replacing the windshield post mounting bolt (please see the two web-pages from AH Spares immediately below for examples of the two types, as well as the texauto and mossmotors pages for other suppliers); I would appreciate recommendations as to which approach (quarterlight vs pillar) is better for eliminating that blind-spot over the left shoulder, and any comments as to mirror shape and suppliers.

"Period type ¼ light mirror which requires no drilling. Easy to fit and very useful for manoeuvring."

"There is no need to drill holes in your wings with these clever mirrors that screw into the windscreen pillar replacing the pillar to body screw. "

And in case anyone else is thinking about external mirrors, here’s all the threads touching on the subject for the last few years (searched for mirror in body; anytime in the last seven years, from the Austin-Healey thread):

I added external mirrors to mine... did both sides (car originally had none). I basically mounted them aligned with the back edge of the bonnet, and did convex on both sides. I absolutely love their location! I like the look, and visibility is fantastic... negligible blind spot left. Click on the link in my sig and you can see some photos of what it looks like.

I think I'll aspire to Robert's mirrors, but stick with the bolt-on type for the moment; and it looks like I misread/misunderstood some of the references, as I sure can't see how to mount a windshield pillar bolt replacement type mirror on our BJ7, so it's looking more like the vent window type. Suggestions for sourcing and shape and alternatives sure still eagerly anticipated!

I've been driving with the quarterlight mirror from AH spares for a year now on a BJ8 and very happy with it. I'm 5ft 11 and it's a perfect view for me and requires no drilling. I also added the extended mounting for the rear view mirror which improves view behind when top is down, i.e. all the time.

I fabricated my windshield mount out of 1/16" thick stainless plate, polished it to look like chrome and mounted a round mirror on it. It uses one of the windshield pillar screws and is very simple to make. I just can't bring myself to drill holes in my painted fenders! I will post a picture if I can figure out how to or I can email you a picture. Have a good day!

Ian

One thing to consider is will the dash mounted rear view mirror block the view to to the passenger wing mounted mirror. It may or may not with the stock low dash mirror stem, but might if you add a riser or use a longer stemmed mirror like I did, which as Ivan points out, improves view behind when top is down.
Cheers,
Roger

I suggest you opt for a side view mirror that does not require drilling holes in your car. Besides, those fender mounted mirrors look goofy. Just my biased opinion, I'm sure there are some here who think they are the cat's pajamas.

I use twin Talbot green dot bullets which are period to the car. They have convex mirrors and sit 22 inches form the rear of the fender. They look neat but you have to like the bullet. Aerodynamic so the bugs don't stick.

When the hood (British top) is down (usually) I stick a suction cup mirror at the top of the wind screen to see over the hood covers. It is also convex.

Well yeah TH but they can get Pricy:

One of my BJ8's came with a pair of them installed.

Good Idea TH,
I use a ski boat mirror attached to the top of the windscreen frame no holes drilled uses a clamp.Provides a 180 Degree view to the rear of the car as well as allowing you to see over your luggage mounted on your boot rack when traveling.--Fwiw--Keoke

I mounted the conventional type mirrors about 10 to 12" from the windshield posts. I feel it's better than out on the fenders over the wheel hubs. I can reach them from the seats, and they're easy to reach underneath. I also mounted the long stem rear view mirror onto the dash to be able to see over the convertible top. All from AH Spares.
