Did a REAL Dumb Thing!!!!

Yep I just screwed up big time. I did what several of you suggested I be careful about and broke through the block with too long a bolt for the water pump. I was torquing every thing down when it happened!

So, what are my options?

I know that one option is to start over with a good block, but I really, REALLY don't want to do that.

So any help please, with ideas.

Over the years I've turned screwing up into an artform. As a result I've gotten pretty good at unusual repairs. If you simply poked a hole at the bottom of the threaded area, it can be repaired by drilling out the hole and cutting new threads that will accept a sealed threaded insert.

in all seriousness, i'd call your local machine shop that has been around for some time. so far, my local machine shop has repaired at least 2 really big screw ups for me. saved me about 200 dollars in buying replacement parts and cost me only 20 bucks to fix my mistakes. they seem to know secrets about fixing all kinds of problems, and i'm sure have seen every problem you can think of.

at least call them for opinions and solutions cause there is more than one way to skin a cat.

On the TR 4 cylinder block, there are several holes that are threaded all the way through. Just apply a good sealant like Permatex non-hardening to the threads (of the proper length bolt) and it should seal up OK. I think....

That's what I was thinking, as well. There is at least one of the bolts that secure the water pump housing to the front of the TR8 block, whose threads go through to the water passage. No leaks here. Just be sure you've cleaned out the metal bits first!

Yep same thing that the engine mechanic that did the machining on my engine said. Sealant is the answer. Phew, do I feel better. He uses Permatex ultra copper high temp silicone. Have a tube in my possesion as I type. He said that it isn't all that unusual of a situation.
My thanks to all of you for the suggestions. Peter, I keep a BFH around just for those "special" occasions. I have a very stout table and a large chunk of railroad tie that I'm able to vent on. My very understanding wife knows when those sounds are being made that I'm probably not working on a part of some type or another.
By the way Peter, I sent you a PM awhile back, did you ever get it?

I use totally different words (NONE of which can be posted here) at a MUCH louder volume and tend to throw things that shouldn't be thrown at things that shouldn't be thrown at (wrench at car, carb at dog, etc.....).
