After 2 years of waiting, Moss FINALLY was able to find a 1968-1980 MGB flywheel (part #460-685) and I promptly ordered it. It was delivered to the shop on Friday, and I cheerfuly drove out there on Saturday thinking I was going to at long last get to put the engine and transmission back together and be able to see the possibility of them going into the car. I should have known better. I unwrap the very nicely and well protected flywheel, compare it to my very rusty original one and realize that my original one has an extra hole that the new one does not.
On the end of my crankshaft at the back of the engine there are 6 threaded holes for the mounting bolts, and 2 locating pins slightly smaller in diameter than the mounting bolts. The new flywheel only has provision for ONE locating pin of that size. Needless to say, that won't work.
So the question is, did I get the wrong flywheel OR did someone put a crank from a different year into my engine? I am hoping someone who knows a lot about the slight changes year-to-year will be able to tell me. I believe it is an 18V engine (single valve springs, emission tube ports on the head, the rivettted block plate is gone but there is an 18V stamped into the flat where the rivetted-on plate would go).
I don't want to complain to Moss about getting the wrong part if there really IS only supposed to be one locating pin on the crank end, but then that means what DO I order that would actually fit? I thought about having a machine shop bore the second hole, but if I could find someone capable of doing that they would probably also be able to resurface my original one - and I have not had success in that. And it would need to be rebalanced if that were done....giving up and buying another engine is starting to seem reasonable at thing point.
