Choosing a color

Yes you heard me, for me for my 18th my dads going to pay for a paint job.
I was thinking of a silver.
I' m going to have her painted late july august area.
Ill have to do the sanding and get some of the dents out.
Then a painter thats my friend will do it for the supplies and about 200 bucks.

JUST TO NAME A FEW THINGS!!

Everything that has a color has to be painted over - if not, you've really DPO-ed the little car (& that's not a nice thing to do!)

I'm not taking the engine out. I dont care if the engine basys another color
The engine wont come out ever again.
To be a DPO you have to get sale it i dotn plan on selling it.

Nope - you're worse than a DPO when you paint the car silver & leave the engine compartment yellow...you're a DO!.....you're slowly killing that little car, Keenan - but, then, some people tell me I've killed my '79 V8 car, so I suppose we'll keep one another company.....

Why not paint it back its original color?

Ha, if you are going to keep it forever and you think it will not need a complete restoration in five or ten years you are kidding your self.

Engine out and all that stuff.

Paint it the same color, unless your take the whole thing down it just ain't worth it.

No, your original color is "Chartreuse" & unless you're ready to strip everything off/out of that car, repaint it "Chartreuse"!

Keenan. Please. After all the hours of work and advice and aggravation, don't half-@ss a paint job.

DPO. Enough said. You are not going to have that car for the next 40 years. I would be surprised (and I say this in the absolute nicest way) if you have that car in the next 5 or 10 years. Quit trying to jigrig your car. If you can't do something properly, leave it alone.

A paint job is not $200. Add another zero to that for an acceptable job, double it for a perfect job.

A freaking $200 sprayover on a yellow car is a train wreck waiting to happen. It will look like crap. Oh sure, from 50-75 feet away at 50mph it will look okay. But at some point you are going to have the car parked, you are going to open the door, the bonnet, the boot. It will look like sh!t.

You're better served to use the money on some quality products and put some muscle and time into cleaning the car up. Starting with the interior. Then some Maguiar's Color FX or whatever it's called. A couple coats of that. Will really restore the color. Then some Tech Wax. Clean every nook and cranny in the car with Q-tips. That will look a hellalot better than a $200 whatever you want to call it.

You make me nuts sometimes. Good enough sucks. And sadly, this 'good enough' mentality is everywhere. Emma needs a paint job but there is no way I would let anyone put a $200 sprayover on her. Absolutely not. I'd rather her paint look the way it does than not do it right. And it doesn't take that long to save up for a good paint job Keenan. You're working. Take that money and your birthday money and save it. By end of summer you can have a paint job. Do it right or don't do it at all.

Keenan there is one thing worse than a DPO. And it's exactly what Tony said. A DO. You may never take the engine out again, but you'll open the hood. If you have that car 5 years, 10 years, that engine WILL come out again. But I just don't see you having it that long. You like the car, you like the marque, but you just haven't figured it all out yet.

And yes, you'll sell that car at some point.

Keenan, my dad got a lousy paint job on his Lincoln about 40 years ago, and he's still regretting it. Unless you're doing a temporary paint job to try to keep the tinworm (rust) from taking over, do it the right way.

I did a rolling restoration paint job on my Midget. Everything has been repainted (although not at all at the same time) However, I do not plan on keeping the car and I do not plan on selling the car. I'm focusing on the drive train and other running gear. When I find the time and money I'll buy a new shell and paint it correctly then swap the running gear over and crush the old shell (it is a patch work of wrecked cars). So...

My suggestion is focus on the mechanicals of the car and start searching for another shell to be worked into the car/color you want. You can continue to enjoy your car while doing the body work on the other tub. Then take a week an swap things over. Then you can sell your tub to someone else.

But in the short term, buff the car and clean it up and enjoy it. Put your money into other aspects of the car that will serve you well when it is time for a new and proper paint job.

Keenan - another thought: Putting a $200 "spray can" paint job on your car will ensure you become the next owner's DFPO! Because after your friends razz you over the summer about your crappy looking car, you'll definitely sell it - for parts car price - as quickly as you can!& when you bring it to MG 2006 & serious MG lovers slam it, you won't even want to take it home!

If you spent $200 having it professionally detailed, you'd have a better end product!

Keenan....stay focused on the mechanicals of your MGB....and, as Tony sez...have it professionally detailed (it's about $100 here in Champaign for a car that size)....FWIW

Right! Nothing worse than a non-matching engine compartment/truck......If you really want to bring your old paint back, and are not afraid to spend alot of time and engergy heres the way I find works best; Start with turtle wax polishing compound(the white stuff), then 3M polishing compound(liquid and sold only to automotive finishing shops), then use mothers 3 step prcess(cleaner, glazer, and wax)....If you like you can substitute mothers final wax with another wax of your choice(I like Nufinish)....I do this to all my cars at least once a year and I've had people stop me in my DD to ask how it's done.

I'll take a bit of a contrarian position here.

First, If a guy doesn't like the current color of his car...he can change it if he wants to. I personally would do the engine bay, but I'm at a different stage of life than Keenan (as, I surmise, are most of you). There is nothing preventing him from painting the outside of the car and then waiting until there is a reason to take the engine out (it will inevitably happen) to do the engine bay. In the mean time, an 18v ain't the prettiest lump to look at anyway. I would however, make sure you jamb the car well.

Second, there is no reason you cannot get a decent paint job for a couple hundred plus supplies provided: a) you teach yourself to do the prep work well, b) you know a painter (well) who shadetrees (as you mentioned is the case) or can shoot it yourself, and 3) aren't expecting a concours job. Been there- done it (for exactly $200 plus supplies)...and I got a good result. I would suggest reading John Weimer's article on prepping for paint on Tony's site.

It is your car to do as you want, but do not become a DPO it wouldn't be fair to sunflower. All of us here are older and may have seen more things during our lives. One thing that would turn off all buyers is a yellow engine bay and a different color exterior.

A car can be painted for $200 in materials, not concours but with enough effort a five feet away job.

My .02

Besides Liz would have to repaint the hooter, maybe get a new wardrobe to match.
