caged nuts

Try this again-
Hey guys:
I'm fitting the rear wings on my 57 tr3, and I need to replace several of the caged nuts. I ordered some from trf, but they are 3/8 inch outside diameter, and are too small!
The rear nuts are larger to allow the nuts to slide in a slot.
I tried Fastnal, but no luck.
Anybody know where I can get some?
Thanks, Emmett

Emmett-

Might want to give Mark Macy at Macy's Garage a try. He has a couple of types of caged nuts available.

I've never found any suitable square nuts with 1/4-28 fine threads. Haven't had to solve the problem myself yet, but if I did, likely I'd buy some square steel stock, drill & tap it 1/4-28, then slice it into nuts.

That's likely the way the originals were made anyway. And since this is a relatively low stress application, ordinary mild steel should work fine without being hardened or anything afterwards. MMC has 1018 or 1024 in 1/2" square 12" long sticks for under $5. 12L14 is easier to tap & drill, but they only have 6' sticks of that listed.

Macy's cage nuts don't float like the originals did. That would probaby be OK if you could have the bolts in place while you weld the cages, but that's kind of difficult.

Here's what I used. They come from McMaster Carr. They look ver similar to the original.
part number: 90955A113
Retainer Weld Nut Plain Stl, 1/4"-28 Screw Size, 1-3/4" Base Length
In stock at $6.36 per Pack
This product is sold in Packs of 10

As for the elongated nut, I had to buy them from Moss and get a square nut from Lowes.

You guys have confused me.
Randall, I want to ride, not learn how to make nuts.
Larry- I just need to buy a square nut, 1/4 by 28, that measures 1/2 inch, outside diameter. Oh and it must slide in the slot in the rear wing.
Trf didn't have them. Does Macy and Moss stock them?
I guess I'll call Monday and find out.
Thanks, Emmett

Emmett,Randall,

I do have both types/sizes of cage nuts from Macy's
in front of me. The nut does float a little within the cage.

I will take some photos and post back.

Cheers,

When I was restoring my 1958 TR3A, I had a machine shop make me 110 square nuts out of stainless steel. The new ones were 1/2" square and he drilled and tapped them for 1/4 28 UNF as original. So I had quite a few of the old ones left over. I used quite a few of these on the next TR3A that I restored and have given most of the rest away to friends who were restoring TRs. I may still have a few left.

Hi Emmitt,

What are the outside demensions of the nuts and are they 1/2" thick? I'll take a look at my car to help visualize what Randall is suggesting. I may be able to make you some from stock I have lying around. How many do you need? Do you just need the nuts or the cage also?

My price will beat TRF and we can work out a "hot shot" shipping deal!!

Sorry, Emmett, just trying to present alternatives. I can whip out a nut quicker than writing to this forum and waiting for a reply, let alone having to mail order them. But everyone has their own comfort level/ability when it comes to repairing cars.

Emmett, just curious, couldn't you remove the nut from the weld type cage nut?
Can't remember but are they a special dimensions?

I used a bunch of those McMaster caged nuts and they worked out fine. I also bought cages and nuts from TRF several years ago that were as original. Are the ones they are supplying now not to spec??

Edit: Just for information...I had some broken weld nuts at the very back of the car where the three vertical weld nuts hold on the back end of the rear wing. Since there was really no way to get up in there to weld on some new caged nuts, I used these from Mcmaster... Part # 90594A040. They can be welded from the outside. They worked out really great. Since you have to buy a package of fifty, I have a buch left over if anyone wants some.
