Bleeding Front brakes

Right, yesterday i had to split one of my front calipers in half to remove and clean the piston.

But, how do i bleed it, as its now full of air? will the bleed nipple clear air from both pistons, or will it just clear the inside piston?

Steve, the bleed screw will bleed the entire caliper, but it may take some time. I prefer to do it with a vacuum bleeder, but the conventional way works just fine.
You shouldn't have had to split the caliper to remove the piston.

Cheers Jeff, the piston was rusty, and i wanted to give it a good clean, splitting the caliper seemed the easiest option, i left the bleed nipple to soak in WD40 over night, but this morning i snapped it off anyway!

I'll see if I can get it out, otherwise it looks like i'll have to get a reconditioned caliper or find one in the garage!

I really hate it when that happens. They can be a bear to get out.

Use a bolt extractor to pull the nipple out and replacements are available. ALSO, you should replace the seal between the halves of the caliper to assure no leaks. Bleeding is greatly simplified with one of those one man bleeding system, available for about $6 at your local auto parts store

I've got an easy bleed kit, I'll have a go with it later.
There is about 4mm of the nipple still accessible, so with a bit of luck I should be able to get some mole grips onto it and persuade it to turn

Hi Jeff,
I know money's pretty tight everywhere but you might consider Advance Auto if you have one in you area - Cardone # 19444 and 19445 - MGB ( I assumed it was a B - no notation in your profile) front caliper - $51.88, $10 core Limited Lifetime Warranty - Not a bad deal, I bet VB and Moss are twice as much.

Good luck with the bleeding bleeder nipple!

Screenprinter, it was Fox, not I, who broke the bleed fitting. He's in the UK, so I doubt if the Advance Auto information is much help! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
It was a nice gesture, however. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Sorry about that Jeff - I sometimes get caught up in the excitement of the moment and tend to lock-up - mentally.
I can see where it might be a stretch for Fox to find these particular parts. It seems that Englishmen pride themselves on fixing the part rather than replacing it - an admirable trait, but one in which I am sadly lacking - I'm old enough where I tend to take the path of least resistance, meaning if I can afford new stuff I'll buy it if, for no other reason, than the MFF ( Mashed-Finger-Factor).

I should imagine he could find reasonable replacements in the UK should he wish to anyway - after all He's from where they made em'

Fox, I salute you with a resounding

"God Save The Queen and Pass the Penetrating Oil!" - Drink a pint for me when you finish up tonight. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif

Jeff,
Just a small postscript - This'll show you how on top of things I am - When I saw Fox's location as "N Yorks" I thought his typing was on a par with mine and he was located somewhere like Bufalos, Albanys, Rochesters...Manhattens.....Oh well, go figure...

screenprinter, cheers for the advice bud, but going to the USA just for a caliper is a bit to far for me!

We have pleanty of places to buy mgb parts from, i find moss a bit pricey, but theres at least 10 local places i can think of to get mgb spares from!
