Backwards is as backwards does.

Several months ago I posted about having trouble fitting a front hub from a Morris Minor onto a Bugeye Sprite with a disc brake conversion. Gerard pitched in, explaining that he'd not had trouble making similar swaps in the past and offered to help in any way he could. (Thanks, Gerard.) We finally got around to re-visiting the problem today. Well, my guess is that Gerard never put the bearings in the wrong way 'round. We did.

Chagrin abounds.

Mike caught it. We put the bearing in the first hub months ago; that's when we ran into the fitment problem. In the interim we very cleverly lost track of the bearing set for the other hub and resorted to reusing the set off the old drum brake hubs. (All we needed to do for right now is get the BE rolling. Things can be tidied up later.) While taking the bearings out of the old hubs the light bulb went on and Mike realized the error in our first attempt. AND ... I DROVE THE MGA HOME TODAY!!

Glad it worked out. And I think ALL of us understand this sort of stuff. I wonder how many of us collectively here have put the upper trunnion on backwards? (probably like zillion of us....including me) :friendly_wink:

+1. What I find even more fascinating is this collective need to confess our errr foibles, it's the internet, we live hundreds of miles apart, and no one can see, and there we are, telling all. (yeah me too) sheesh this confession thing seems so popular maybe a church should start using it or something....

JP, there's something about THIS forum that encourages me to speak openly about my trials and tribulations with these cars. I know I bring up off the wall ideas that I only discuss here...funny how that works.

Cathartic, I think. Sharing the failures and successes makes me feel a bit better about them both -- nice to have someone to laugh with when I screw up.

Yes, Yes, the stuff that ISN'T in the books, manuals etc. The "your suppose to know that" deal.... Everywhere I turn in doing this car there has been the mistake that only the beginners seem to be able to share... What I want to know is when do I get promoted to novice???

I feel like I graduated to Novice when I got my *second* Bugeye to work on. There are actually some tricks and special tools that I already have handy in my toolbox. Of course, there's still plenty to learn and plenty of areas where I can go wrong.
