1098 Distributor Cap Question....

Quick question. It is time for some new plug wires / dist. cap, and I noticed that there are 2 different type caps available, the side-entry screw terminal type, and the top connect press fit type. Does one style have an advantage over the other? Will they both work on the 1098? My car (66) currently has the side entry type.

Assuming they are both for the 25D distributor (the most common) they are interchangeable.

I prefer the old-style side-mount caps because my race car uses solid-core, copper wires and I like the fact that the screws make a solid "bite" into the copper.

My street MGB needs cap and wires soon too. I'll probably switch it to solid copper wires and a side cap too, because they seem more sturdy and I don't care about radio interference. The B only has a hopeless AM radio which I don't listen to anyway.

If you have a radio, then the top-mount cap with suppression wires is probably a better choice.

I use the solid wires and side cap too for the same reasons as Nial. It is nice that there is a choice though.
You're going to find that some vendors think that, because the side cap is different, that it must be rare and worth a lot of money. There are guys on ebay that try to sell them for as much as 49.00. I just keep my eyes open for them. I picked one up a month or so ago for 4.00 + 3.85 shipping.

I have a 1098 as well. I prefer the top entry cap, just for the ease of replacement. I run 90° plug wires out of the dizzy just for extra space.

Don't mess around and try to go cheap. Order your cap and rotor from Advance Distributor, or Peter C.. Get the good stuff.

You can also buy a ACCEL # 3009 8 cyl 7mm universal kit from the local parts store. Enough stuff for two of our cars. It is solid core and yellow.
