BN2 center horn button assembly

I think I recall reading somewhere how to stop these from rattling. I assumed there was some sort of bushing but that seems not to be the case.

I can move mine back and forth about 1/8 inch and on a mildly bumpy road it rattles a lot. any suggestions?

Thanks

G'day Bruce,
There is a light spring washer within the assembly, sometimes referred to as a 'wave' washer that loses its tension. Simply bending it back to its "wavy' shape will IMG_0420 Trafficator 6.jpgeliminate the rattle. Unfortunately, you have to remove the stator tube to get at it!

I'm not sure that is where the problem is though. I can move the entire control head sideways back and forth about an 1/8 inch and that is what rattles. There is supposed to be felt piece that goes around a stator tube. Apparently not available for a BN2 but must be easy enough to make. Basically whatever that control head is attached to or runs through, the two tubes rattle. It looks like there are two stator tubes? It seems if I can push a felt around one of them it will tighten the entire setup. I have to play around with this and see what comes off where and how. It looks like BN2's are different than later models and this has non adjustable steering. Pulling the stator tube up sounds a bit tricky from what I have read so far.
Thanks

Hi Bruce,
If you look at the right hand side of my photo you will notice that the stator tube has a sort of tubular spring on it. This gadget centralises the stator tube inside the steering column. That part also wears because it stays still while the column rotates with steering input. Perhaps that is also worn? The bad news is that that part is not available from any of the normal suppliers. I recently helped out another 100 owner with one that I had liberated from a wreckers (or breakers) yard. Most '50s Austins have them.

OK! I think I am beginning understand this all now. My guess is that spring is missing or badly worn. Now to track one down.
