57 T-Bird hard starting when hot

OK, I have a 64 BJ8, but my other car is a 1957 T-Bird, which is really hard to re-start after it has warmed up. I put a lower temp thermostat in it, and it runs cool enough unless it is just idling in traffic. Then it tends to run hot. The engine temp also goes up a fair amount right after the engine is shut off. I suspect the gas is actually boiling out (evaporating) from the carb. The carb has about a 3/8 inch spacer (insulator) between the carb and the manifold. So I think I know the problem. I just don't know the fix. Ideas???

Is is a mechanical fuel pump or electrical? If mechanical you could "help" it with a low pressure electrical to provide a fuel supply without having to crank the mech. pump during the fuel starved hot starts.(i.e. either add or replace your mechanical pump with elec. like our healys have.

yes it is mechanical. so I suppose that requires me to grind on the starter to prime the carb. I will see if an electrical fuel pump is available. just hope it's not an S U or lucas. I don't need more trouble.
thanks,

Make sure that the choke works properly. If the car is warm and the choke isn't fully off, it won't start.

I assume that the starter is cranking well?

Also, make sure your fuel lines are protected from hitting exhaust manifolds and other really hot places. This could also be a problem that when the car is turned off, the gas stops in the line and actually begins to get wicked hot, making it vaporize before getting to the carb on restart.

I had a similar problem and after much searching of the fuel system found that it was the coil getting too hot and failing.
Easy to check if you are getting spark and that elimnates that area at least.

Does it still have that crazy "inside out" holly? If so, you probably are right about boiling the fuel out of it. The electric pump should fix it. Just remember, when you search for one, you want one for a carburated engine (not FI)
