I have had a high speed shimmy or bounce in the front end of my 74 Midget for a little while. It happens between 62 and 68 MPH. The front end was completely rebuilt a while back and I did the alignment myself. I had the front tires balanced three times. No solution. I narrowed it down to one of three things. Tires, drive shaft or third motion shaft, bent, in the gearbox. While at a junkyard helping my son I spotted two almost brand new tires for $20. They were the correct size so I bought them. Had them mounted and balanced and Voila! No shimmy or bounce. The tires I had on the car were Hankook's. Now I am sure Hankook is a good tire as I have them on my modern cars. They must not be rated for such a light vehicle. In the metro Phoenix area all the roads are paved with "rubberized asphalt" to eliminate noise and help the environment, it is made from old tires, and this road surface tends to become scalloped over time. I guess the Hankooks were the wrong tire for this application.
