A lot of posts on the forum have recommended POR-15 and I'm sure it is a good product. However, I decided to gamble on something a bit different and my son and I are trying KBS Rustseal (see www.kbs-coatings.com ). I ordered their Frame Coater Kit which comes with a degreaser and etcher. You can skip both of these if you are blasting and just go right to the paint. Without blasting, they recommend you use their degreaser and etchant since they don't leave a residue to impede adhesion of the paint.
Both POR-15 and KBS are somewhat UV sensitive and need an opaque topcoat and KBS can supply that as well. KBS seems to be a bit less expensive than POR-15. I got my shipment in within two days of placing the order.
We are getting our blasted frame coated by a local vendor with a mil-spec gloss black urethane coating used to harden Bradley tanks for the military, and they claim it is pretty tough - we pick it up tomorrow so will post some pictures. All of the parts we took off the frame are getting two coats of KBS and a KBS topcoat, all gloss black.
The KBS is incredible - the stuff is thick and stretches forever. I was able to coat all of the driver's side suspension parts with about a half inch of KBS in a small paper dixie cup using a cheap foam brush (which I strongly recommend - just throw it away afterwards). After two coats were dry we were unable to either scratch it or put a dent in it with our fingernail - the stuff looked wet but was hard as nails. The top of the KBS paint can warns you that if you let any of it dry on your skin, the only thing that will remove it is time, and I can attest to that fact. After some dried on my finger. no solvent I have tried, including pure acetone has any effect whatever and it is still there after a week. They also warn you not to paint right from the can, but to dip it out into a separate container. They tell you to put some plastic kitchen wrap between the lid and the can before sealing it back up or you may never be able to open the can again, and I can easily believe it.
A quart would easily do a whole frame, but you might need a bit more for all the parts.
So far, I am really pleased with this stuff. Will post some pics of some finished stuff this weekend.
