Timing Setup - Pertronix

Does anyone know where the distributer timing should be set for a TR6 using Pertronix Ignitor?

I can't figure out where my distrib needs to be sitting at.

Also, the adjustment of the module to the magnet.. is it critical ?

Thanks

Gary;

Timing is the same as with the points (4 degrees ATDC), dynamic. I don't know how critical the distance really is but I just checked mine, the module has 1/8 inch spacing at its closes point from the magnet. I also just removed the litte white sticker off the module, as it had started to peel off. Don't forget to regap your spark plugs to .030 inch from .025 if you havn't done so already. The one thing I don't like about the electronic timing is I can't determine engine RPM from the distributor/coil with my multimeter anymore. Does anyone have a solution for this.

Hans, this may come as a surprize, but I could only get my car to run with timing set between 12 & 20BTDC, the latter being best. I don't have the vacuum advance connnected as it is not working. I have been fiddling with the distributer today .. moving it - driving - moving it - driving and so on. The distrib feels happy in about any position.

In my experience, the best way to time your six is by the seat of the pants. If you have the vacuum retard operational, strobe it in to around 4 BTDC. Then take it out and find an incline to labor the engine in fourth gear. Advance the distributor a wee bit and climb the incline. If you don't hear detonation (pinging), you're not quite there. The objective is to advance to detonation, then back it off slightly. Of course, you'll have to adjust your idle when you get to that point too.

Good Luck!

If the module is close enough to trigger, it will be fine. They don't have to be as fine tuned as the LED or point types, and a bad bushing won't adversely effect it. Seat of your pants is how I time Brits too. Nail the gas in 4th., doing thirty. slight ping that goes away when you hit 40. Or, however you always timed it.
