TR4/4A TR4 Timing Cover Setup

Last year I replaced the timing cover seal on the barn find. For 3 weeks there wasn't an oil leak anywhere on the engine; no really, it's true I tell you. Of course this couldn't go on forever, so reality stepped back in and the timing cover seal started leaking.

I do remember NOT sliding the pulley hub on to align the cover before tightening the bolts. I have it all apart again (I did seal it well, so this time it gets Hylomar release agent applied) and will probably replaced the cover seal again just in case.

Now the question. Before I put it all back together again, I want to double check which way around the oil thrower (deflector) disc goes.

I just took mine off last week. It is dished very slightly and the deeper part of the dish is towards the rear. In another way to describe it, once it's in place when you're looking at it from the front, you are looking onto the bowl.

Ian, Hylomar is an excellent sealant, on machined surfaces. I find however that it doesn't seal so well on flexible seals, such as stamped steel covers. Just me, but Permatex Aviation, when applied liberally and allowed to tack, does a better job. IMHO

Thanks Don, that is how mine is, but I wanted to be sure.

Bill. Are you referring to Hylomar PFD (?), which I believe is an actual sealant where I am talking about the Hylomar release agent. My local NAPA is getting some in for me.

Back in my aircraft wrench turning days it was a purple (I think) liquid that allows a sealed gasket to come away from the sealed surfaces easier upon disassembly, while still letting the gasket and sealant do its job. At least that's how I remember it.
