Thread: bugeye front tilt hood fastener -- choices

Discuss the Austin Healey Sprite and the MG Midget. Two different but similar cars sometimes referred to collectively as the Spridget.

    bugeye front tilt hood fastener -- choices

    I need fasteners for my front tilt bonnet. I am considering getting one of the choices in the links below. It looks to me like the first one (the all metal one) is NOT spring loaded, and the knurled bottom suggests that you have to loosen and tighten it each time. Does anyone have any experience with either of these two fasteners?

    Keith,
    Those look like the same style as used on Jeep CJs and YJs. Popular period styles include leather straps on each side and you can always install Spitfire latches which look really good. Google ‘Spring loaded hood latch’ and select images and you’ll see a bunch of them.

    I found these 8 years ago. They are small and unobtrusive but I'll be darned if I can find them again.

    I am doing Spitfire type on both my Sebring and Ashley fronts. I found these pictures that show a nice installed set.

    I’ve got a set of the Spitfire bonnet locks and I’m trying to figure out how to mount them inside the footwell so they won’t show. Once my shop is finished I’ll have a place and hopefully the time to work on this project.

    I welded hidden fasteners inside the wheel wells.

    Drilled the hole on the tub first, then tack the Dzus fastener plate to the bonnet.

    Here's a few other choices;

    One MOre
    https://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk/ca...s-bonnet-catch

    I'm currently using this one from McMaster Carr Catalog, Stainless Steel Adjustable Draw Latches w Safety Catch. I like the fact that they are indeed adjustable for fit
    a ton of options here:

    Bugsy IV - '60 Bugeye - 1,275+.040 and a 5-Speed - CA Car - 2nd Owner from new - 10/12 Painting done, reassembly, cutting, and buffing in progress.

    Here's a link to the bonnet catch that Histerical was referring to. Been holding down my bonnet for 12 years without a failure.

    Thanks to everyone who answered. I had no idea there were so many good choices out there. Time to start making a decision, I guess.
