Anyone know why the manual transmssion flywheel is 1/16 inch smaller than the automatic flex plate? I'm in the middle of a conversion and the starter doesnt line up! Help!

What year/version of XJ6 are we talking about? What kind of trans conversion? A few more details will help get your question answered.

It's a 1976. Had a BW65 now a Jag 4 speed OD from a 1976 XJ6; I have checked that all parts are 4.2L. Flywheel is a new Fidanza, but I measured the Jag flywheel and all of them are 1/16th inch less in diameter than the flex plate. All have 133 teeth. I am going to try a gear reduction starter and then modify it's mounting plate, which appears easier than modifying a stock one. Someone must know the answer to this mystery!

the Automatic Transmission Starter, and the Manual Transmission Starter are different, maybe that's the problem. In other words, are you trying to install the original Automatic tranny starter after you converted to the Manual tranny?

Such is the case with my 1965 S type, which uses a different starter for Automatic and for Manual trannys. Same engine, different tranny, different starter.

the difference is that the Automatic Starter has a "nose" adapter, and the Manual Starter does not. Otherwise they are the same identical Starters. Fortunately, Lucas made the adapter removable, so the same starter can be used for a Manual tranny by just removing the nose adapter.

then you have the Flex Plate in the Automatic tranny, and the Flywheel in the Manual tranny. And that's where my knowledge stops.

I looked in the Lucas book and it only lists 1 starter. I also checked E type, and it also only listed one (remember 2+2 automatics). I would advise consulting a real Jag parts book. It is possible that the bellhousing is also slightly different and repositions the starter to suit. All of this should bolt in, with no parts modification. If you are really stuck, PM me and I will contact a friend with all the parts fiches.

I bodged the starter mounts and now it works, but the mystery remains: why was the flywheel smaller than the flex plate! Thanks to all.
