Windshield installation BN6 +7 , BT7

I am in the process of installing the windshield in our BN7.
The rubber seal went in easy enough but I am questioning if there should be some sort of sealant or gasket where the windshield's chrome frame meets the two upright posts. I didn't see any evidence of a seal but the car was in pieces when I purchased it.

Thanks Bob

My BN6 didn't have anything in there when I disassembled it. Never drove it in the rain once it was back together so don't know if it would leak or not. Hindsight tells me I should have put a small bead of silicon in there "just in case". Bob

My windscreen frame had a small amount of the caulking that looked like the same stuff as the material between the shrouds and the wings. When I reassembled I used a small bead of 3M black body caulk (dum-dum).

Thanks guys. I don't see how the car could ever even come close to being water tight but I will apply some sort of silicone or that black mastic looking material.

I put mine together without any type of sealant between the posts and chrome frame, and it has not leaked in any of the rain (and one-time snow) that I've been in. https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcforum/u...ement#Post73223

I'd be leary of using anything that has any potential bonding strength, as it would be pretty easy to distort that (chrome plated) brass frame around the windshield glass, should the glass need replacing in the future.

I have considered disassembling my BN6 windshield to replace the glass and have the frame components re-chromed. I would be very interested in knowing more about the process of removal - installation, pitfalls, tips, etc. Did you photo-document the process? PM me if you would like to share. Thanks

Great pictures, thanks for sending. I recall reading that thread way back when, and feeling my stomach churn. Your pillars are not painted. Does that make it any easier? Were you able to get the correct pillar mounting screws?

I don't think the painting makes much difference, unless it's really thick and bonded to the chrome too. In that case, it may chip away where the two join.

I've considered painting the pillars, but on my (color of) car, I like them plain aluminum. If I had another set, I would certainly try them painted, to see what it looks like.

Yes, I was able to find stainless steel oval Philips heads screws at the local hdwr store. Like I had said, they are well stocked, and it's very rare that I can't find what I want, let alone what I need.

So on a 1-10 (or more) "difficulty scale" how would you rank this project? Factoring in time, required skills, anguish and achieving excellent results. With a tune-up being a "1".

Nevets, I guess that would depend on how many of the screws break off. Mine was already apart when I bought the car and about 1/2 the screws were broke off flush in the post. I am still dealing with trying to drill them out and fill in the holes so I can retap them. Nothing has been easy on this car,
it has fought me every step of the way for the past 5 years plus.

Sorry to butt in on this post but i am about to remount my windshield on my BJ7, did i see a post somewhere about the proper way to install the rubber seal between the screen and shroud (or did i dream it !).
Anyway is there a right and wrong way or is it fairly straight forward.
ps i took my frame to bits and it wasn't to bad apart from the odd screw breaking off, from memory i thinked i soaked the remaining piece of screw left with some WD40 and got the mole grips on it, other than that i used the seal kit from AH spares, yes it was a bit tight but got it fitted up ok in the end, just got to mount it now.
