TR6 volvo OD on TR6

yep, done it. j-type overdrive bought off ebay attached to my rebuilt TR6 4-speed tranny. There are a number of steps involved but it is not that difficult.

After adding up all the parts required to covert the volvo unit, did you end up saving money over buying a Triumph overdrive?

From what I can tell I will need the folowing:
overdrive adapter plate $150
third motion shaft $250
if I want the speedo to work I have to buy a kit $200
I plan on fabricating the mount

Am I missing any parts?

The Volvo units seem to be more readily available. All in all I think I saved money making this conversion sourcing my parts from ebay, TRF and Quantumechanics. You should go ahead and rebuild your tranny in the process since you will have it torn apart to replace the mainshaft. My parts list and prices within the last year:

-New mainshaft $200
-Adapter plate $125
-eccentric cam kit $40
-speedo driven gear 20 teeth $49
-speedo pinion gear 8 teeth $59
-new rear output flange $60 (may be necessary)
-interruptor switch for tranny cover $10
-overdrive wiring harness $?
-overdrive column switch $?

I think I will save money as well. I just bought a ex volvo unit on ebay.

This will be my first tranny rebuild. I am looking foward to it.

I thought these would only work on 1973 or later TR6 gear boxes???

There are two different overdrive mainshaft's available for the j-type. You have to know your tranny ID# and purchase the correct replacement mainshaft.

yes, my '71 is living proof. so long as you get the correct mainshaft then your only real issue is buying or fabricating a mount to fit the j-type to your early model frame.

there is a complete j type kit on ebay listed today.

I fabricated the mounts. Generally the j-type mounting points are further aft of the pre-73 frame mounting points. Three pieces of angle iron cut to fit and bolted together in a sort of u-shape topped off with a couple of spare mounting bolts and pads. There are some instructions floating around the net.

Most, or nearly all of the Volvo units run on automatic transmission fluid, which you had better get out before it mixes with the 30 ND oil in your transmission. That means replacing the OD filer as well. The ATF is actually better and gives them a longer life. Additionally, most Volvo owners actually service and take care of their cars, so you have a better chance of picking one up that has had the filter changed several times over the life of the car. These cars are usually not run hard or abused either.
