TR4/4A TRF Fan 8 blade in 4a

I'd have a hard time timing the car, adjusting the valves, replacing the points, working on the engine, etc. if I couldn't grab that stout four bladed fan.

I doubt it helps much on cooling, too. Otherwise, we'd hear more rave reviews.

I'd be happy to be all wrong.

TR3 -- not 4A... My experience:
I think it DOES move substantially more air.
I had to be mounted backwards on the crank extension for clearance. This is easily possible, but the fan blades are shaped to operate the other way. This may reduce its effectiveness, but it still moves more air than the old metal fan.
I believe the TR4A crank extension is longer than the TR3 version, however. So, if you wanted to mount it right-way-around, you could get a TR3 crank nose and bolt to mount it on. It should fit that way.
When I want to move the motor for timing, etc., I use the hand crank. It's too bad they discontinued that feature.

On my TR4, it definitely helped, particularly in slower traffics with stop lights. At idle, the metal fan just didn't pull enough for me. With the plastic blade it definitely handles the slow running better. Don't forget though, I'm in Houston - being in Canada if you are overheating you might have other issues to contend with.

There is in MHO only one choice for cooling on a 3 or 4 ,the 13 blade fan off the tr7 is the bomb!!!! Take the old fan, cut off the arms, make the hub round, then drill 4 holes and mount it up.The fit is perfect, you dont have it backwards and the off-set is spot on.Besides folks will give you tr7 parts, and thank you for taking them!!!If you are desperate to spend some $$$, you can have a nice hub made up and drilled out(or just send it to me!!)

There is not much to see, just more blades.the issue is to have clearance with the steering arms(which this does).Honest guys its a two beer job to convert stock to the tr7 unit. I have only done it 7 or 8 times, but am about to do one more soon for a tr4 I am building, and will take a few shots.

The heat is one issue (when it's not snowuing up here) It can get in the 90's
My great fear is metal fatigue
"IS this the day the blade decides to part company with the hub and roar thru the hood .... ?"

I put a plastic TR6 fan on my 4A many years ago, and just last year needed to replace the fan belt. Not sure if this is the same fan from TRF.

It's a tight fit, with only one inch (or less) of clearance between the fan and the radiator, but I have never had a any problems. That said Water temp is very consistent, even on hot days, and I have never overheated. I did have occasional overheating with the original metal fan, and this solved the problem.

If you remove the spark plugs when adjusting the valves there is no problem turning the engine with the fan, or by pulling on the fan belt.

One heads up.., in order to change the fan belt with the plastic fan installed you will likely need to loosen all the the radiator attachments, loosen the top hose and push the radiator towards the front of the car, in order to get the original belt to pass between the fan and radiator.

And remember, many of us 4A owners have found a need to loosen the engine mount bolts and lift the engine up a inch or so in order to get the belt between the fan extension and the cross support. I have found this is necessary when changing the belt with the plastic fan installed.

So make sure you put a new belt on as you won;t want to change it for a while . I used a The Gates number is TR28386 (7/8 " x 39 1/4" - 22 x 995 ),which is available at NAPA under part number 25-2437 or 25-28386. There have been several threads on fan belts so you might want to check the archives before purchasing. I had a problem with the belt from Moss (squeaking), and needed to replace it with the Gates

Good luck

Your fears are well grounded ,I have had the blades fly off the stock fan at speed, but being light weight they didnt do too much damage.A tr3 /tr4 converted to the 7 fan will not exceed 195 degrees on a 100 degree day with a 180 thermostat.(given a good cooling system),even in traffic.
