I finished rebuiling the rear suspension a few weeks ago, and now I am busy starting to rebuild the front supension/steering in my 69 TR6. Never done any of this before, which makes this that much more of an adventure. I don't want to spend more money on something that doesn't have to be replaced as this is an expensive project to begin with. How do I know if the front shocks need to be replaced? Is there a way to test this? Any help to educate me on this subject would greatly be appreciated.

The easiest way is to press down hard on the fender a few times and get the car rocking. Release; if the car continues to bounce several times before settling, your shock need replaced. If the car settles after 1-2 bounces, it is probably good. Repeat on other side. If one side is bad, replace both.
If you are planning to remove them, when off, compress them by hand. If they demand a steady, very firm pressure, they should be good. If there are weak areas were they compress easily, junk them.

Also any sign of leakage, even just caked dirt on the housing is cause to replace them.
