TR6 Clip wires on front brakes for TR6

Another question.
I was assembling my front calipers and installing the new brake pads. With the pads there is a couple of clip wires, their intended use appears to be to clip the pad backing plate to the anti squeal shim plate. One end has a loop to go around the pad retaining pin the other just hooks under the other retaining pin.
My original brakes did not have these. I don't see anything in the Bentleys about them either.
Is this something the PO left out?
Or is something new?
Or are these parts of one of the other cars these pads fit?

Not standard for a TR6 AFAIK. Might be an improvement developed by the pad manufacturer, though, to reduce noise/squealing. Unless there is a problem, I'd install them.

Here is a photo of the spring clips installed on one caliper and one without. The one on the right has the clips installed.
Looking at it now in the photo, I wonder if it should be installed so the long length of wire should be on the other side, so it rest against the anti squeal shim?

No they are not painted or powdercoated. This is a driver and the really deep detail work like that will have to wait until I do a frame off.

It doesn't go any faster or stop any better with paint or powder coating, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

That setup makes sense on the right. I haven't looked at mine either, but tomorrow I will grab a shot of the newly rebuilt calipers complete with pads that I gt from TRF's rebuilding service. I think that they have these on, just like you do.

We used to glue the anti squeal shims to the pads years ago, this would probably work better as that stuff used to break down after time. No pun intended.....

The anti-squeal plates I have have a small lip bent into a spring form on the top of the pad. Same basic idea, just to keep a bit of pressure between the shim and the pad. My guess it that it otherwise the shim pads probably start vibrating and making noise when the brakes are released it is not held against the pad. Put it in, it certainly can;t hurt.

The spring clips you have are the same ones that are used on the Girling calipers used on 240 Volvos, but you do have them backwards, the "long side" of the clips go against the anti-rattle shim. Also you must install the safety retaining clips for the pad pins (the small spring clips that go thru the holes in the pad retaining pins) like you have on the caliper shown on the left. Otherwise there is nothing keeping those pins from working their way off and ruining your day. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif
