TR2/3/3A TR3 Tire brands and size

Folks,

My understanding is that the modern size that comes closest to matching the original 5.5x15 tires is the 185-65-R15.

What manufacturers and models of tires are recomended for the original 4 inch wide wheels? Also, who are the common dealers for the recommended tires?

Have to admit I'm happy with my 165/80-15 Kumho 758s:

Yes, 165/80-15 is about as close as you can get to a 'metric' 165-15 which is about as close as you can get to the likely original size.

You don't say what year the TR3 is -- but perhaps you have 4.5" rims?

I bought the steel wheels second hand to get rid of 48 spoke chrome wire wheels
that were on the car 2 years ago when I acquired it. I had the steel wheels media blasted and powder coated. They measure 4 inches inside-to-inside.

I've heard good things about the Kumho's from a few of our club members, and JC Whitney has them pretty cheap. They don't reference them as Kumhos by name, but I am told that if you look at VW Bug tires there you will find 165/15's and they shipped Kumho's to a fellow club member on two occasions. One of the tire reviews on the site also names them as well. Part # 27795G at $74.99 each buy three get one free with free shipping until 7/14.

Vredestein Sprint Classics are another option as well, but are a little more expensive. They look more like original tires though. Check out JEGS online if you decide to consider Vredesteins. Just picked up a set and they were cheaper than anyone else on 165/15's.

I contacted Kumho directly and was told they are no longer making tires in 165 x 15 size. Any Kumho tires of that size still being sold are of old stock.

I went with the Vredestein Sprint Classics from Xk's Unlimited in Calif.
I hope to have them mounted and balanced next week at $20.00 per tire, which seems to be the current price everywhere around here, but still too much.
