Hi all,
Got my recored radiator in and took a spin. Generally it ran great but I think I need to do some static timing on it. When you first get in second or third (haven't been in fourth because I am still apron less and just going around the neighborhood) it is hesitating and takes a while to gain revs. Once you get the revs up it is fine. It's like it is
cold but doesn't warm up. I have my new 8 blade fan on with
a narrower core so it has plenty of room now and sucking in alot more air than it was before. I never thought I would worry about a TR running too cool but the temp never got past the marking before the 6 o'clock 185 degrees that it usually is at and I assume it the normal temperature since it is right at 6 on the clock. I haven't taken the time to figure out what temperature that is but I am wondering if it is too low. Maybe 170 degrees? Some of it must have to do with the apron being off.
My tachometer has never worked correctly. It works but is way high and sometimes doesn't come back down to 0. I used to think it was exactly twice what the real rpms were but now I don't think so. It just goes wild as soon as I start it up and is way high maxing out most of the time. The cable and gear on the distributor at least looks normal though I am not sure what it should look like. The cable is
in good shape and there is some correlation between the tach
and the engine speed so I am thinking the mechanical stuff is good up until it gets to the tach itself. I removed it which was alot easier than I thought it would be, and after breaking it down as far as I dare go it seems as if there is a problem with the innards as when I spin the needle by hand
it is very random as to where it returns to. I got it to return to 0 a few times and then it would return to a seemingly random different reading. I have no idea how a Jaeger tach works but it feels like there is a weight of some kind in there but it is not acting at all consistently.
On the face it says (after the normal RPM X 100) "2:1" It has alot of white colored moldy looking stuff on it but I am
not convinced that cleaning this off would make much of a difference. Has anyone dealt with this tachometer before?
What I was hoping of course is that I could just clean it or
find something obviously broken but I do not see anything that looks off. There seems to be some kind of combination of spring and maybe magnetic thing going on. It will not be the end of the world if I don't have it working but it would
be nice.
Also, is 800 rpm a warm idle speed I should shoot for? I've always had a higher on but the engine is running better than I remember running before and I was able to get it just a hair over 800 rpm.
Thanks very much,
Jim Lee
