TR2/3/3A TR3 Engine Painting

I was wondering what ya all think about painting the engine of my 1959 TR3? I am completing the engine rebuild and ready to put it all back together. I am/was thinking I would paint the engine with a flat black ceramic engine paint supplied by Eastwood (I ordered the kit) but I got to wondering if this a good plan? I am also waiting for some warmer weather cuz it is really cold in the garage right now.

The next question is when to paint everything, do I wait until after I have completed the engine reassembly or paint the block before I put all the parts back together? It seems that the timing cover and oil pan were a glossy black originally and I am not sure if the head was ever painted? Is it important to use different paint finishes on the various parts and paint them seperatly? Yikes details! Any advise is appreciated!

I used gloss black paint for the block that I bought in rattle cans from Summit Racing. I think flat black would be difficult to keep nice, as any oil or grease would darken those flat (nonsheen) areas. I am really happy with the spray can finish and it is very durable (used a primer first). I think it was VHT but I'm not positive. I painted the pieces separately and assembled, but you could just as eaily spray it assembled with pan and timing cover. Just put some old spark plugs in the head during painting. And yes, paint the head too!

Howdy Dorn,

When I rebuilt the engine on my `57 Small Mouth; I used a VHT Blk. Gloss Engine Paint on Block, Hd & timing cover "Seperatly". This way all the nice new Hdwr. you use shows some really great "Detail"; Presuming you are putting on new or refuburished Hdwr?

Have Fun,

Russ

I did it the same way as toysrrus. I like seeing the detail of the contrasting hardware.
