TR2/3/3A TR2/Early 3 Door Wood

Some of you may have seen my earlier post when I was searching for a source for door wood for my TR2.

Well, I found a local craftsman who is making right and left hand wood reinforcements for my TR2.

If I can get a decent price on these, I may offer them for sale. I have no doubt that the quality will be excellent. The fella that's making them for me builds world-class woodie bodies from white ash...he know's his stuff.

So you fellas with early TR's keep that in mind...I'll let everyone know what happens with this idea...and post some pictures of the finished product.

My wooden door pieces for my early TR3A were all dried out and split when I did my restoration from 1987 to 1990. So was the arch that goes along the top of the dash. I used Elmer's white wood glue and lots of clamps to get them back in order. I also used lots of wooden match-sticks and more of the white glue to fill the holes before I installed the interior trim.

The right door was pretty wasted from dry rot...hardly good enough for a pattern.

The left side was pretty sound...only a hint of rot and it's being used as a pattern for both sides.

I've seen "Kwik-Wood" or "Kwik-Poly" used sucessfully in a couple of restorations on older Fords. It's a polyesther filler that can be countoured and sanded. Pretty good stuff.

I'd definitely like to hear the details when you get the new door pieces back. I'll be starting to tear down my 59 TR3A soon, and I have a feeling the wood in the door may need to be replaced.

Wood in the doors! What wood in the doors? I don't remember my 59 having wood in the doors. So that's where the termites were coming from. Of course, when I owned my TR3 I was in the Army during Viet...nam and everything was a fog back then.

Post-TS60001 cars generally do NOT have "structural" wood in the doors EXCEPT where the side curtain mounts screw on.
