General Tech Heater and Vent Control Cables--TR2 thru TR4, and more . . .

Is there a reason that the cables are "crossed" behind the center control console? Why doesn't the heater vent one go directly from the left console hole, and the heat volume control directly from the right hole? A random guess: The designers felt that by having the cables longer and crossed the users could better manipulate them for space behind the console, which is a bundle of wires anyway? Some more obvious reason?

That must be a TR4 thing. The TR2/3 don't use cables, but rather electrical blower wires and manual heater flappers...except for the center vent that runs straight in the dash and doesn't cross anything.

Could it be to reduce bend radii?

(I’m not there yet with my rebuild…)

Interesting question. I had not noticed that, and logically installed them with the vent control on the left and heat control on the right. I just checked the manual and indeed they are as you say.

I will say that, my way, the vent control cable is a little too short for convenience. The sheath of mine actually cracked near the clamp on the heater body--but that might have been my fault, as I restored the cables myself. As for the heater control, I can't see any advantage to having it on the left. Perhaps this arrangement gives you a little more room if you have to remove the console, but I don't see a lot of evidence elsewhere of design for easy repair access.
