TR2/3/3A tr2

Well I bought a tr2 yesterday. I need to stay off Craigslist, but I thought I would share because my tr3 infatuation can be habit forming and contagious. I once heard Geo say he always enjoys looking at old triumphs.

This car has the wrong engine plus, been road hard and hung-up- wet, the doors are wrong, and I do not know what else yet. The Wipers are different than I have seen before and the hydraulic system is different, and it has brake shoes on the front. This will be my first experience with the older hydraulic system, I guess Lockheed.

Anyways, I have the car drying out up in the barn. The rust is deep in places, and the car is rough, but the rear wheel arches, inner and outer, are better than the one I have been restoring ---------- I have not started taking the car apart yet, but wheel arches look and feel stronger. .. Plus it is a whole car in one piece!

It had 2 flats; the right front only had a rim/wheel, there was some air on the passenger rear. The car slid off the wreaker at about 30 degrees then into my mud driveway in the snow. Heck the shop said they delivered, but I had to coax them in to the tow later because I paid up front. This story is the stuff; I can do all by myself. I had 4 used old wheels and tires put them on in the snow and it was fun.

You may want to let Bill Lynn know about the car. I checked his TR2 survivors list and your car is not included. Thank you for rescuing another TR2!

Thanks guys for the encouragement and the desire to provide help, knowledge, and History in the Triumph World. Hey auprichard how would I find more about Bill Lynn and his tr2 research.

John I was impressed when you purchased your tr2. The car you bought was complete and original with overdrive. I could see how that would make a project at least possible and in your case the car turned out beautiful. This car is not original, but the car was whole. As odd as it sounds I enjoy taking these cars apart.

If you go to VTR.org, then to the cars section and click on TR2, you will see his list as well as his guide to originality, Having restored several TR3s, I took the plunge and restored a long-door TR2 a couple of years ago. I found parts much harder to source (some, like baby tenax, are literally impossible), but there are lots of people on this forum and others who will be glad to help you along the way.

Your TR2 looks much better than mine did...especially in the back half. It's hard to believe mine has been finished for 5 years now!?!

Yes time flies; I started my blue car at the same time John did. I need to get out and get some pictures of the blue car in the mountains around here. the blue matches the sky. Anyways here are some pics of my latest disassembly project in the barn. I will bring the tr2 into the lower garage someday if I keep working and stay humble, I like snow.

If I am seeing right, it looks like a low port head. What is the block TS number? Is there a chance it's the original motor with a newer intake?

Hard to get my head around the idea the car is almost 70 years old!! Good luck with the resto, I’ve also heard a 2 resto is a lot harder than a 3.

Thanks guys for your kind words. The TS # for the block looks like TS 58189. Hey, John I am not sure exactly what a Low port head looks like. I figured it had the H6 cars, so that was the end of that, but guess not.

The block might be good; it has about 4+ quarts too much oil in tit. Probably because they had this dip stick out of who knows what, and it is about six inches or more short. Very serendipitous ha, ha, I am the joker who thinks filling an old motor with oil until the oil runs out the plug holes will help possibly save the motor from breaking when disassembling.

I just realized I have 2 gallons of old whole from oil changes this winter, bonus

The pics of the head or probably not that good, but is snowing and raining---nasty stuff. I will get clearer pics soon, please tell me where.

The high port head intake runners come slightly above the level of the valve cover. That looks low port in the pictures. The block is definitely later, though. Could be something happened to the block and they re-installed the original head on a replacement block.

I think it will buff right out and you'll be on the road in no time at all.
